The Wednesday Interview

This week’s brilliant author is Ashlyn Chase and her romantic comedy Demolishing Mr Perfect. It’s available to buy now at Ellora’s Cave along with Ashlyn’s other books. Next week Jacqueline Roth drops by with her eagerly awaited, hot new release Access Denied.

Demolishing Mr Perfect - The Blurb

Even though she’s a nurse at a sperm bank, meeting young, virile medical students every day, Natalie Watson’s relationships always seem to suffer from “stress fractures.” With a hopeless prognosis, she seeks metaphysical help. The tealeaf reader tells her there's a perfect man for her, but she might have to change her definition of perfect.

Shane (Crusher) Derby, owner of Derby Demolition, takes out his aggressions all day long by blowing up buildings and smashing the contents. He couldn’t be mellower until the nurse in the adjacent building tells him to keep it down. He’s making her donors jump and miss their cups. And he has the nerve to think it’s funny.

The Interview

1.You have some sizzling sex scenes in your book. How hard is it to write sex and make it convincing?

Okay, I’m just going to come out with it. You know how they say “Write what you know?” Well, it’s not that difficult if you have a willing hottie who can put up with the many and varied research demands. *snicker. My wonderful hubby doesn’t mind at all.

2. Romance and the condom. How hard do you find to slip it in or on when the action is hot between characters?

I don’t like to interrupt the spontaneity, but my editor insists I be “responsible.” Phooey. I get around it in the best possible way. I used to be a blood donor nurse. Since blood donations (or semen donations at a sperm bank) are thoroughly tested for anything nasty, I have my characters doing the humanitarian thing—not just the responsible thing. Give blood! Save a life. Jack off. Give a life. There. My public service announcement is done. After that, stay faithful, use birth control and you shouldn’t need a condom.

3. Do you think romance just happens or do you make your characters work for it?

When it’s right, it usually happens without the grueling effort that goes into some of the ‘romances’ you read about. But that’s real life. That’s one of the ways you “just know.” You click.
Don’t get me wrong. I love reading about a butt-kicking babe who gives the hero a hard time in the beginning and an Alpha male who laughs, knowing she’s going to give in.

4. What is it about your hero that makes him irresistible to women?

My guys are usually charming. They have a good sense of humor and though they may not always be sensitive or smooth, they come through when it counts. They make my heroines feel beautiful, sexy and like one in a million (which they are.)

5. Do you think readers want to escape or do they want to identify with a character?

Both. I see nothing wrong with a hero or heroine who has all the things we want, and a little more. Why not put our best selves into the story, but with something special as well as a flaw or two?

6. What do you think is the most important thing to remember when writing romance?

Be entertaining or go home! Do NOT bore the reader!

7. What are you working on now?

Well, I just finished a very hot Quickie. I mean like an hour ago. And yesterday, an agent contacted me about a novella. She asked me to consider doing a whole series starting with that story, basing each one on a different Greek God. Hey, who doesn’t love a Greek God, hmmm?

Last weeks brilliant author – Anh Leod and Bijou's Bonds

Anny went a ‘tidied up a bit’ on the serial blog. I personally see nothing wrong with a messy drama - however wander over to the neat www.annycook.blogspot.com and see what’s been cleaned. On www.kkirch.blogspot.com Thursday, Kelly will no doubt turn in an update on the saga that will make my eye twitch as I wonder WTF to write as a response. She likes doing that. She sounds perky but it is my belief that the perky ones are the most dangerous because they lull you in a false sense of security with all the cheerful good will. Scary. Thankfully I am neither neat or perky so the serial will all go back to being a pig’s breakfast on Friday.

Go ahead: Live with abandon. Be outrageous at any age. What are you saving your best self for?

Perky is my diplomatic cover. It's like handing someone a beautiful pillow and then whipping out a gun. They get all distracted by the pretty colors until they realized they just got handed their @$$. A method that works very well for me.

and the pretty pillow was meant to muffle the blast... sigh. lost the plot on that metaphor.
