What about…
I was talking to this twenty-something year old woman who said women’s rights are no longer an issue – ‘not like in the old days’ – because women 'can do what they like.’ I said what about women in countries where rape is not considered a crime or if it is they take years to prosecute the men involved because all deny it was rape and she ‘was asking for it?’ What about women who are stoned or who have acid thrown on them because they have been wrongly accused of adultery? What about women who want to hold down a job or get a better education but they are beaten or shot in an effort to stop them? What about when the ‘old’ wife who is thrown out of a village to fend for herself, with nothing, to make room for the ‘new’? What about child brides who are married to disgusting older men usually as a form of payment? What about so called crimes of ‘honour’ where a young woman is killed because she loves someone her male relatives are against? What about female genital mutilation where a young girl is forcibly held down and her clitoris cut out with a crude razor and then be roughly sewn up often with little or no vaginal opening left to her? What about we pull our heads out of the sand and realize all women, regardless of colour, status or nationality, should be allowed to live as they choose, think as they believe and act as their conscience dictates without a man ripping that right away from them?
What affects one woman affects us all. If you think it doesn’t then you don’t think.

How lucky are we....
Video clips like this remind me how lucky we are as women and how much we forget that and the struggle of other women. We can go to the mall and we can wear nail polish without being in fear or having to justify who we are as human beings.
I don't know...is America setting an example for the entire world at the moment when it comes to women's right? I don't think so.

Keep your legs together ladies...

"We say to Mom that you tell us the wrong name, and we'll bring that guy in and we'll do a blood test and that's not Dad, you lose your welfare benefits... Not till you tell us another name, but till we find out who Dad is, we establish it." At a meeting in Williamsport, Pa., in March 1994, Santorum advocated that teenage moms should be ineligible for welfare, arguing that a main reason they got pregnant in the first place is because "they get a pretty big cash benefit." Santorum's focus on mothers during a report from that March. The paper noted that "his bill would encourage states to refuse welfare to unmarried parents, require unmarried minor mothers to live with their parents, and the bill would reduce federal payments to states that do not achieve high rates of paternity establishment."

Social commentator and finder of wacky news Abigail-Madison Chase, who I regularly read, posted this on her facebook page. It’s what Rick Santorum, one of the many insincere looking, big white teeth, can’t-trust-any-of-them-contenders for the US Presidential race said. I say show me someone with crooked teeth and scars on their hands and I’d vote for them. But I’m not in Yankee-land. However I am concerned which nonghead gets in next because they have the power to truly fuck up the world.
Anyway, this Santorum guy said all this in 1994. Yeah, it was a while ago but people don’t change that much.
"If Mom knows that she isn't gonna receive welfare if she doesn't tell us who Dad is, y'know maybe she'll be a little more careful, maybe," he said."
Well exactly. Its women who make men have sex. Men don’t want to have it.
Clearly, what needs to happen here is all women who are unmarried are immediately to be handed chastity belts, wear black flowing robes that cover them from head to toe, be forbidden to even look at a man and basically if they’re not married by 30 they should be imprisoned as recalcitrant. Or if you believe in equal rights then maybe just don’t vote for this Santorum nitwit.
I’m thinking this Rick bloke needs to go to a quiet place, lie down, have a long nap and leave the world alone.

Bollocks...
I don’t see this as romantic. Rape never is. It also makes me wonder what the hell is wrong with women if they see this as acceptable. When did rape of an innocent become okay and something to read? When did we revert back to the dark ages when women were still treated as chattels to be used and abused by men?
Nah, you don’t have to agree with me. And yeah, read and write what the hell you like. But call it romance and slap a woman enfolded in a man’s arms cover on it and sell it as true love? Bollocks.

Bangladesh 'Eve teasing' craze takes a terrible toll / Women's Rights in the News / Women's Rights in the News / Home - AWID
"Another negative manifestation of the problem is the tendency of parents to push underage daughters into early marriages so that they can escape Eve teasing. Parents think that if their daughter has a husband, they will be saved from the dangers."
Bloody disgusting and wrong. These are not men. These are animals.

Belgium bans wearing of Islamic burqa in public | News.com.au
I disagree with women being forced to cover up in the name of archaic religion but in the same token legislating against those who may choose to follow a certain lifestyle is also wrong. Everyone cannot and never will be the same and heavy handed tactics are just as bad as oppression.

Hits and misses....
Miss…
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has turned back the clock to the days of the Taliban, signing a law that strips women of basic rights protected by most civilized nations. The new Shiite Personal Status Law, which applies to the country's Shiite minority, is a disastrous step backward for millions of women, who suffered most under the Taliban's Islamic fundamentalism. It severely restricts their rights in every area of life: A Shiite woman would need her husband's or father's permission to leave the house, pursue an education, hold a job or even go to a doctor's appointment. Only fathers and grandfathers would have child-custody rights, and by stipulating how often a husband is entitled to sex, the law permits marital rape.

This saddens and angers me so much. I want to go over and shake him. I actually thought this bloke had a clue but I think he is more interested in being a fashion plate than a leader. As far as we have come as women – and I mean women of the world – because I believe what effect one woman effects the other - because we are all one – there is some idiot man trying to drag us back. You are a wanker mate. Develop some balls and stand up for the women in your country.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton explained clearly why the country's progress cannot be separated from that of its women. "You cannot expect a country to develop if half its population are underfed, undereducated, under-cared for, oppressed and left on the sidelines," she said. "And we believe strongly that that's not in the interest of Afghanistan or any country."

The Iowa Supreme Court today ruled that a ban on same-sex marriage violates the state constitution's equal protection clause, striking down a 1998 state law limiting marriage to a man and a woman.
The ruling makes Iowa the first state in the heartland, and the first key swing state, to legalize same-sex marriage.

I don’t care if you are purple, green or spotted. I don’t care who you love. The thing is you love that person and that is all that matters and if you want to be with them then you should be regardless of what religious bigots think. Good on you Iowa. The oppression of anyone is wrong and needs to be fought against and anyone who thinks otherwise should pull their head out of their arses and contemplate for one moment how they would feel if someone took away their rights. I don’t think you’d like it.
‘Want to piss me off? Piss around with human rights and that will do it every time.
