Of work and toilets...

I had nothing – and I mean nothing  - to do at work today so I wasted time as expected by surfing the net looking for jobs, nail foils and other odd things when I saw this –

I find it fascinating that some public servant is in charge of listing public toilets. Bet that’s a fun job. Anyway, it’s not the first time I’ve seen it. I wrote about it in Thigh High – an exceptionally Aussie themed book that a publisher thought would be a good series to do. It wasn’t. Too much Aussie confuses people. But there you go…

Thigh High….0.99 cents – what do you have to lose? https://www.allromanceebooks.com/product-thighhigh-600244-340.html

Excerpt…

As for Amberwarra Falls—well, there were no “falls” to speak of. Years ago, before the crippling drought, there had been a trickling stream of water that ran over a rocky outcrop down into Possum Gully. It had never been spectacular but it had drawn the odd tourist to stop and take a photo before moving on. But not now. There was nothing to see but red, rough rock and dust. Even the possums  had left. There had been talk about changing the name of the town but that had been vetoed. As Beryl Adler, cultural guardian of all things local had said, “If we change the name we’d have to change the postcards and we got them as a job lot.” That was true. They had six hundred and thirty-two left out of six hundred and fifty purchased. No one was about to throw those out due to lack of water.
I still don’t know why he’s coming back to bung in a gym where Davo’s book emporium burnt down. Not like we need newfangled stuff like that.”
It hadn’t been so much an emporium as a dusty old shop that sold tattered old books, comics, newspapers and once a week the local poker game had been held in the back storeroom. It was on poker night that the store went up in flames. Many said it was the cigars the men liked to smoke. Others blamed a mosquito coil used to keep the insects at bay.
The real reason?  The  fire  brigade  found  evidence  a  scented  candle  had  been burning during the game. It was thought someone had knocked it over. Of course no man admitted to it mainly because being caught anywhere near anything scented and girlie was not something any of them wanted to claim.
Yeah, we don’t need new stuff in the Falls.” Dusty always agreed with anything Blue said. They were mates since kindergarten. “Besides we’re already on the map.”
Maz rolled her eyes. She knew which map they were referring to. “That map is hardly prestigious.”
Yeah, but if you look us up on gaggle—”
Google,” Maz corrected Dusty.
Same bloody difference.”
Merlene picked up and rattled the swear tin at him.
Fair suck of the sav, Merle. Bloody’s not a swear word.”
Cough up, sunshine.” Merlene waited for Dusty to pay up for his swearing.
Jeez, you’re a mad cow. You and your bloody wombats.” Dusty threw a collection of coins into the tin.
You used two ‘bloody’s.”
Dusty rolled his eyes and added a ten dollar note. “Happy now? Anyway, as I was saying, anyone  can see the toilet block in Captain Cook Park got Amberwarra Falls fourth prize in the cleanest toilets in Queensland.”
Maz smiled and wondered how Captain Cook would feel about being a namesake of a park that held a toilet block that was the second biggest attraction to the now nonexistent falls. There was  even  a shiny brass plaque proclaiming they were fourth best.
Yeah, dunnies are important if you pass through Amberwarra as there’s nothing for miles until Krogan’s Crossing.” Blue slapped some more money on the counter for a refill.
Merlene pulled the beer, flicking the tap with an expert hand. “And your Auntie Beryl does a roaring trade with her crocheted doll toilet roll cover stand that she’s set up just outside those toilets.”
That’s right.” Blue thanked Merlene for the beer. “Beryl does big business for the Pioneer Women’s nag-fest group and no one gets past her without buying one.”
That was true. Auntie Beryl could sell toilet roll covers to aliens from Mars. It wasn’t so  much  she was a great salesperson or that the dolls were attractive. They weren’t. It came down to  the fact that Beryl, at fifty-three, with her fake raven-black locks and large breasts and forceful voice, often stopped people in their tracks. She was like an aging kewpie doll, complete with Doris Day bow in her hair. Once stopped, they often walked away with at least one crocheted doll and a few less  dollars in their pockets. No one said no to Beryl.

Yeah...we're a weird mob.

Going Down Under…

Thigh High is released today at Ellora’s Cave. This book is full on Aussie – speech and characters – and it hasn’t been toned down or Americanized, as my books usually are, to fit into the market. How will it go? Stuffed if I know - but it was beaut fun to write.

Thigh High is basically about Aussies – the way we talk and think and carry on. We’re a straight forward mob. We say what we think and we make no apologies for being to the point. This – and our use of slang - often confuses other nationalities. We mean no harm. We are as you find us – casual, outspoken and always ready to take the piss (pull your leg). And yes, it’s true, all the men look like Hugh Jackman…would I lie to you?

Thigh High….the blurb…..

Fourteen years ago, Joe Patterson left the small outback town of Amberwarra Falls and broke Maz Adler’s heart. Now he’s back. Hotter and sexier than Maz remembered. It’s hard holding a grudge when you want to hold a luscious man tight against you and lick every hard, hot curve. But the man needs to be taught a lesson and Maz is the girl to do it.

Joe came back home for one reason. Maz. Problem is, Maz isn’t about to open her arms and allow him back into her life and her body. But Joe has a plan to seduce his lover and break down Maz’s resistance. His aim? Her total surrender. And he’s going to enjoy every hot, sweaty moment loving her under the Aussie sun.

Someone sent me this….it just cracked me up…

MEMO to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Tourism Australia: Please send more kangaroos to Australia's international airports.

”I, like every other stupid American, assumed the kangaroos would meet us at the airport and they would want to hug us as much as we wanted to hug them,” Bell said in an interview in Los Angeles.

”That's really the perspective we have here.

”Going there kind of opened my eyes that that's not the case.”

Spoiler alert…I’m sorry to report there are no huggable kangaroos in Thigh High.

Sunday....

Finished my Aussie book submission. All my books are set in Australia but this submission was specific. It had to be a very real Aussie book – not the sanitized ones you get that are pseudo Aussie – lingo and all. Strangely enough, some people can’t understand us Aussies sometimes when we speak full strine. The book took some time as I had to do a glossary because without it, no matter how many times you have seen Crocodile Dundee, you would have had stuff all idea what I was talking about. But it’s done and gone to my long suffering editor who will read it and bang her head on the desk and say “why doesn’t she listen to me? It’s ‘who’ not ‘that’ and there are two people yet there five hands and he cannot be doing that to her unless he is a seven foot tall contortionist with delusions of grandeur.” Oh well…’never said I was perfect…

Someone gave me a bunch of daisies. It was such a sweet thing to do and it meant a great deal to me. Daisies are my favourite flowers. I’ll tell you a secret – I would prefer a bunch of daisies to a diamond. Uh oh - did you hear that? It sounded like the rumble of great thunder. A bunch of Jones women, all dead and gone, rolled over in their graves in horror. I guess I’ll have some explaining to do when I get to hell.

Have a good Sunday. I’m going to have to clean up after the flood we had in Brizzie. Most of the water has gone and the mud – yes lovely – is all dried up and easier to deal with. Luckily, I fared pretty well. I feel for those buggers who didn’t. Sometimes life is so bloody random and unfair that you have to wonder what the cosmic plan is or if some cosmic deity just got drunk and thought – what the hell – let’s screw with their lives.

Before I go to the gym and run and jump and sweat a lot…the things we do…something I don’t understand - “Funniest Home Videos” – I don’t get how someone being in pain is funny…or why friends and relatives would try to profit from it but filming the pain…please explain.

Ocker up….

I was asked a while back, along with some other Aussie authors, to do a story for a possible Aussie Anthology – they wanted us to actually write Aussie words and have a story with a true Aussie flavour.Struth-stone the crows – holy dooley–you little ripper-that’s ace. I spend most of my writing time trying not to be my normal Aussie self as some people have no bloody idea what I’m saying. Anyway, this project appears to be going ahead so I am ockering up-cobber-bewdy-sheila-mate-Bruce to speak the Aussie-strine lingo.

My editor is an Aussie. It’s hard for her editing me because words that are common, everyday speak to both of us have to be put into Yankee-pseudo-Aussie speak and sometimes real Aussie words with definite strine flavour sneak through. This becomes a problem when the FLE - final line editing person - gets the edited version and thinks what the hell is this Aussie shelia crapping on about? Okay – so she wouldn’t say exactly that – usually its comments like ‘huh?’ or ‘what?’ or ‘what are you trying to say?’ It’s a bugger when that happens because then I then have to work out how to have the same tone and meaning while keeping it Aussie yet making it understandable for a wider audience. I am pleased when I get comments back from readers and reviewers saying they like the Aussie flavour because it means some of who I am has come through the whole process.

I love being an Australian and everything about our culture. It’s hard to suppress who you are and I don’t agree with suppression but I understand the need for it sometimes…sorta. So I am going to have a bit of fun with this book and see is anyone understands it.

amarinda_jones@yahoo.com.au with your answers – there will be 4 in all.

The contest starts 18th July and closes midnight 23rd July 2008 (USA EST). The first correct entry drawn at random will win the prize. Good luck.

So the contest….after consultation with Anny, I wandered off to the supermarket to buy chocolate for the contest. Yes, what a hardship. I just had to make sure it was not a case of one for the contest and two for me – not that I don’t deserve it. Anyway – chocolate - what can I say? I love it. I perused the shelves trying to decide what to buy. In the end I settled for 3 different varieties of Tim Tams and some Aussie chocolate/candy bars I love. The bag of goodies is sitting on a dining room chair. I just now have to look away and not be drawn to sample it otherwise its back to the supermarket. Let’s hope PMS doesn’t overcome me. If it does it won’t be my fault of course.

On the radio this morning

- The Apple Iphone has hit Brisbane and people have lined up for 24 hours to get it. Huh? Won’t it be there tomorrow? ‘Got nothing else to do?
- Theory is that petrol/gas will go up ‘alarmingly in the next 10 years.’ You think?
- The running of the bulls at Pamplona has caused many injuries. Seems a no brainer to me. Bull with horns meets dumb – usually male – flesh = blood and pain.

-This bloke is gunna go off his tree…
-Bugger me dead
-Having a good howl

‘Know what any of these mean? Having a good howl is one I ran past a group of writers today. I do this occasionally as a lot of Aussie expressions are beyond anyone non-Aussie. None of the US writers had a clue what it meant which was a shame. Most thought it had something to do with werewolves. No. It actually means having a really good cry - you know, the ugly cry where you sob your heart out. So, that had to go from the book. I often find it funny when people tell me how Australian my books are. If only you knew how much more Aussie they were. They get modified during edits because the theory is non-Aussies won't understand. I think this is an unfair assumption. The world is closer, smaller and more linked than it had ever been. People are traveling more, meeting and conversing with other nationalities. I believe readers would actually get a lot more Aussie expressions but ours is not to reason why - I write 'em, they get edited into non-Aussie and I move on. You have to when you’re a writer. Take it personally and it would drive you troppo. Troppo? Means mad - generally anyone spending too much time in the heat - in the tropics.

So, the other two phrases? I heard them today. They are so Aussie. "This bloke is gunna go off his tree”…means this man will get cranky, be mad. Someone going 'off their nut' is similar. As for "bugger me dead"…no, I know what you might be thinking but it's nothing to do with that. It means the person is surprised - shocked or amazed. Actually bugger in Aussie language is very versatile - you lucky bugger, bugger off (leave me alone), well bugger(damn). There you go - go out and dazzle people with this knowledge. It’s my ongoing gift to teach Aussie to the world.

Dream Strokes by Desiree Holt is out today at The Wild Rose Press. You did not know about this fantastic book? Lucky for you I have an excerpt. Take a squiz below then click on the cover and it will take you to the place to buy.

The blurb…

Who is this man invading Erin Sullivan dreams, the lover who plays her body like a musical instrument, who knows exactly how to make love to her, to draw out her responses, to take her to unbelievably sensual heights? Is he real or just a figment of her imagination? Dallas Clark wonders the same thing, as each night a raven-haired beauty infiltrates his dreams, giving her body freely, taking him to sensual planes he’s never achieved before? And why does she seem so familiar? Are the spirits of a frolicking merman and a mischievous water nymph reaching beyond a painting in a local gallery? Or has unknowingly sharing the same isolated beach freed two lonely souls from their flesh and blood prisons to unit?

The excerpt

She woke to sense a presence nearby, the feeling that another person was close. Forcing open her heavy-lidded eyes, she saw him standing beside her, broad shoulders tapering to narrow hips, silver light glinting over the curls on his chest and brushing glistening streaks through the rich golden hair on his head.
He was big all over, and hard. Not workout hard like the men she knew. A warrior’s body. There didn’t look to be an ounce of give to him anywhere. He was without a doubt the most masculine man she had ever seen, muscles limned in the ambient light, his face defined by a square jaw and high cheek-bones. She couldn’t see the color of his eyes in the dark, only that the faint light from the sky shone in them, reflecting the lust burning there.
Her heart trip-hammered, and she tried to move away on the bed.
He reached out and placed it a hand on her arm, stopping her. “No. I won’t harm you. Don’t move.”
She looked around. Yes, this was her bedroom, her window with the moonlight streaming in. But who was this man standing so close to her?
He lifted the sheet covering her naked body and drew it back, as if unwrapping a package, his eyes devouring her as each inch of her was revealed. Her flesh shivered under his gaze. When she lifted her arms to cover herself, he shook his head. “Why would you want to hide a body so beautiful and tempting?”
Erin dropped her hands to her sides, unexpectedly craving the stranger’s touch, the caress of his gaze on her skin. Her heart hammered against her ribs and heat bloomed throughout all her erogenous zones. How could she be doing this, exposing herself to a total stranger? Yet it seemed so very right. So…so…fated. That was it. Fated. As if arranged by a power greater than both of them.

Gotta’ love fate…
