Half past get out....

So, I have been going through the correct channels with Ellora’s Cave to remove all my books from them. Why? Because I don’t trust them. They once used to be very good but that was back when readers had little e-book choice. They were top dog and due to lack of competition they were sitting pretty and they generally did the right thing. Oh sure, I was concerned when I first started writing there as ‘old’ authors were leaving in droves saying EC was crap and the ‘new authors’ were also ‘crap.’ Now I’m not big on worrying about what people think of me so I took that with a grain of salt and subbed there. That was until I became concerned about payments and the randomness about when cheques got sent out. Others noticed it too. So, I decided, to move on from EC and sub elsewhere. Now, this was a huge thing to do as Ellora’s Cave have or had this policy where they try and put your tits in a vice so you are unable to move to any other publisher. It’s ruling by fear and many people stayed frozen as they were scared to upset EC. I’m not one to be held when I want to move on so I moved regardless and subbed elsewhere. My tits are still intact.

Anyway, back to getting books back. I had the last four to get back. I emailed the correct ‘Please revert the rights back on these books.’ Now EC is not big on answering emails from their authors. Why? Possibly ignorance and lack of honesty. I don’t know. Anyway, I had been waiting for this publisher to revert the last 4 books back and I had waited the required six months. No word from them. They’re supposed to be professional and say something along the lines of ‘We revert the rights back as of such and such a date.’ That’s the proper way to do it so you all know where you stand.

Today, with no response from them, I checked their website as I have been to see if the books were still there. They weren’t and no word from EC. Initially I was pissed off at their once more unprofessional way of doing business. But then I thought about how a company that is losing authors and readers is most likely in dire financial straits and professionally answering my rights reversion letter was probably not possible when they’ve got their proverbial fingers plugging holes to avoid sinking. Yes, yes, it has been rumoured many times EC is/was going under. I won’t be surprised when their doors close.

So, thinking of subbing somewhere? Do your homework. Ask around. Just because a publisher sucks up to you doesn’t mean they’re good. Do you have a bad feeling about a publisher you’re with? Then you’re probably correct. It’s up to you to sink or swim. This is a tough business. No one gives a crap if you fail. Look after yourself first.

Rate it, write it, trash it….

A thousand years ago when I first stared writing I had no idea what I was doing. I figured I’d put something out there and see what happened. The first story was called Rose Perfect and it had no sex at all in it. One well known publishing company at that time, who has since gone under, said it would never sell and give up. The words ‘Give up’ to me are a challenge. I sold it to Cerridwen Press, the now defunct arm of Ellora’s Cave. As I got more confident as a writer I started to write for EC. Big money could be made there. At that time there was a rating system when it came to sex at EC. I can’t remember what it was exactly but it basically ran along the lines of hot romance stories were sensual and no plot, anal sex/ménage/ MM stories were extreme and that’s where you made the big money. So people wrote to get the hotter rating and the bigger sales. Writers on writer’s loops agonized over whether they could write anal sex to make more sales. No really. It’s true. Then EC got rid of the rating system and that’s when I think it all went down hill and got sluttish in eBook land How so? Well, at that stage Ellora’s Cave was the premier place to write at. To get a contract there was huge. Now? It’s no better then anyone else. No, I’m not bashing EC. They’ve about done bashed themselves to death over issues of payments and loyalty. But that’s another story. The point is ratings divide writers and talents – and no talents. Five flames? I want that rating. I only get 4? Are you kidding me? Did you read what he did to the heroine in chapter 3 with the coffee cup, a pen, a hair clip and three candy bars all while riding a horse? That was 5 flames baby.

Why am I bringing all this up? For the last couple of days I have been solidly writing. It’s a romance story with a plot and some sex. Yes. Bizarre. Will it sell? I have no idea but I’ll put it out there and see what happens. But in writing this story it reminded me why writers are supposed to write. It’s not because we all want to jump on whatever bandwagon is hot at the moment. For god sake isn’t every single bloody ménage ebook the exact same? Its fifteen thousand words of in-out, three up two down, Baby oh baby I love you and you and you – please save me from the evil-doer then please shag what little brains I have left out. All of you. Harder. Faster. Now. Yes, bring the horse along too. And we’ll all live happily ever after. It’s like the seven dwarfs discover Snow White’s a girl with whorish tendencies. Yes, yes by all means email me if that upsets you as a writer.

There are writers who specifically write no plot ménage because they know it sells. And it does. So what does that say about us as writers and readers? The hotter the perceived rating is or best selling genre may be we’ll sell our soul to write it? Is that a good thing? Do we write from our soul or for the money? Do we have any respect for readers? As for readers - are we so blinded by the need to read sex that we no longer realize there’s no plot? Do we have any soul left at all? Do we know what real romance is?

I dunno…it certainly has me thinking that things are about come full circle…

Fake awesomeness…

I was over at the Ellora's Cave site reading some reader reviews I was emailed about by X for several newish releases. I’ve had some pukeable reader reviews there and that’s okay. I’ve put them on the blog in the past. I’m a great believer in giving an opinion. It’s up to you as an individual to accept what another says or move on. Clearly there are many writers who do not accept opinion. I have to wonder if your book is deemed to suck by genuine readers who paid money for it is it going to make any damn difference how many writer friends go in on the EC site and say the book was 5 star and ‘awesome’ to the 1 and 2 star ‘you suck’ reviews. Oh sure, you may get a few more readers buying the book after the false balancing up of negative to positive reviews but doesn’t this also mean that those who were undecided about an author may buy a book, based on fake awesomeness and then think ‘what a gyp! This book does suck. I will never read Hotsy R Totsy’s books again.' It’s not an honest way to do business is it?

*gyp = rip-off

Ah...now I get it....

Ok - finally got verification...the Ellora's Cave cheques are placed in the mouth of a tortoise. The tortoise climbs on the back of a Himalayan mountain goat who walks from Akron, Ohio, to the sea then he jumps in and swims to Australia...that's why they take so bloody long to arrive...

From hmm…to…huh…

Hmm…I have a book released today – Decatur the Vampire. I wrote this book in October and whizz-bang-presto it’s being released in December when another book of mine is also being released in December, less than 2 weeks later, by the same publisher. We live in weird arsed times and yes, I did question it but apparently there is no answer that makes sense on this planet. If you know a sufficiency weird/off the wall answer for this - email me on amarinda_jones@yahoo.com.au I’ll put you in the draw to win one of two copies of Decatur the Vampire. Contest ends Tuesday 15th December.

Now to huh…I have mangoes on the back yard tree…lots of them. In normal drought free times the tree is full of mangoes at this time of year. We haven’t had normal in about 10 years. I have been holding my breath watching these little beauties. But they look set to survive. In another couple of weeks they’ll be ripe. There are 100’s of ‘em. Yum. Everyone I know will be getting mangoes, mango juice, frozen mango pulp…

Toe-cutters….

We’ve been undergoing a shake up at work. There’s a toe-cutter in the building. What is a toe-cutter? A man who has the ability to see problems quickly, cut down those who are dead wood and institute policies that piss some people off left, right and centre – no, not me. Why not? I’ve met toe-cutters before. They’re charming, charismatic men – 95% of the time men – with eyes that see everything yet give nothing away until they’re ready to. They sound scary don’t they? Nah, never sweat the small stuff. Toe-cutters come and go and life still goes on for the experienced and the resilient.

Our current toe-cutter came in and charmed the pants off everyone. Yesterday, some people decided he wasn’t so charming after all and they liked the office, with all the bitching and moaning, the way it used to be. I can hardly wait to see what next week brings. Oh the angst, ridden drama.

New cover…I love it…I bow down to the cover gods at Ellora’s Cave. They never let me down.

Going Down Under…

Thigh High is released today at Ellora’s Cave. This book is full on Aussie – speech and characters – and it hasn’t been toned down or Americanized, as my books usually are, to fit into the market. How will it go? Stuffed if I know - but it was beaut fun to write.

Thigh High is basically about Aussies – the way we talk and think and carry on. We’re a straight forward mob. We say what we think and we make no apologies for being to the point. This – and our use of slang - often confuses other nationalities. We mean no harm. We are as you find us – casual, outspoken and always ready to take the piss (pull your leg). And yes, it’s true, all the men look like Hugh Jackman…would I lie to you?

Thigh High….the blurb…..

Fourteen years ago, Joe Patterson left the small outback town of Amberwarra Falls and broke Maz Adler’s heart. Now he’s back. Hotter and sexier than Maz remembered. It’s hard holding a grudge when you want to hold a luscious man tight against you and lick every hard, hot curve. But the man needs to be taught a lesson and Maz is the girl to do it.

Joe came back home for one reason. Maz. Problem is, Maz isn’t about to open her arms and allow him back into her life and her body. But Joe has a plan to seduce his lover and break down Maz’s resistance. His aim? Her total surrender. And he’s going to enjoy every hot, sweaty moment loving her under the Aussie sun.

Someone sent me this….it just cracked me up…

MEMO to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Tourism Australia: Please send more kangaroos to Australia's international airports.

”I, like every other stupid American, assumed the kangaroos would meet us at the airport and they would want to hug us as much as we wanted to hug them,” Bell said in an interview in Los Angeles.

”That's really the perspective we have here.

”Going there kind of opened my eyes that that's not the case.”

http://www.news.com.au/travel/story/0,28318,26217319-5014090,00.html/

Spoiler alert…I’m sorry to report there are no huggable kangaroos in Thigh High.

Of frozen chooks and raffles…

How many times in your life do you get to explain what a frozen chook raffle is? Not many - and to be honest being an Aussie I would never have to as other Aussies understand me and the whole frozen chook raffle deal. But I wrote this book for Ellora's Cave - Thigh High - part of the Going Down Under series that is specifically Aussie stories written in Aussie speak by actual Aussies. They said speak Aussie in it. We want you to. Right-o, I bloody will sunshine.

Anyway back to the chookchook equals chicken. Why is it frozen? Well, that's what the Fle wanted to know. What's a Fle? A final line editor and basically they are the last person who checks your book before it heads out for publication. Now, the Fle being an American was goggle-eyed at the terminology in the book. Well you would be. Aussie strine is like a foreign language when we speak it in all its glory. Normally I am never allowed to keep Aussie words in any book as other nationalities “won’t understand” - so it was nice not only to spruik fair dinkum Aussie but have it remain in place. Mind you, I had to write an extensive glossary to explain what various words meant. The poor Fle stumbled on a couple I didn’t think to add into the long glossary. I just assumed they were universal speak. What were they?

- I put in that ‘nong’ equalled ‘dill’ but apparently in Yankee-speak ‘dill’ is pickle…in Aussie speak it’s a silly person…I guess some people are like pickles.

- ‘big smoke’ – when someone is reported to be heading to the big smoke it means the city – you know – pollution, smog = smoke.

- and apparently ‘Blind Freddie’ is another Aussie only thing – it means someone with no sense of sight could see the obvious.

And then there's the frozen chook. Why is it being raffled? Well...in Australian pubs it's not uncommon to be having lunch or a drink and someone comes round with something to be raffled, usually for charity or to raise money for the local footy (football) or cricket club (incredibly slow boring game) to get uniforms or to go to some state final or whatever. Anyway, the raffle is usually something like a meat tray done up by the local butcher. It would have steak, snags (sausages), rissoles, lamp chops – the usual barbie fare. Or it could be a seafood tray - prawns (shrimp) crabs, oysters, barramundi etc. Or a frozen chook or chooks. Yep – a couple of frozen chooks on a tray with a dozen eggs. It’s all a bit of a lark and light hearted fun. We’re not serious people but we are gamblers. Aussies we will bet the odds on anything. You have a raffle? We'll take a ticket or several – “$2 each or 3 for $5.00, love or if you buy ten I’ll give ya a kiss.” We love to take a chance on anything even the outcome of a frozen chook raffle.

Thigh High is out October 16th with Ellora’s Cave.

Shiver Me Timbers…

Violet Rose is stunned at the gift bequeathed to her by her aunt Zeta. Shiver me timbers, it’s a pirate! The hot and sexy swashbuckler makes his intentions clear. He wants Violet—and he’ll do anything she desires. Despite all the reasons she shouldn’t, Violet begins to fall in love with the charming rogue.

Pirate Nathaniel Dreadnought has been waiting two hundred years for his true love to release him from his lonely hell. The lovely and very sexy Violet is everything he wants in a woman. To win her love he will fight the fiends of hell.

But an old foe has been waiting for the awakening of Dreadnought, and he’ll stop at nothing to come between the two lovers.

I never actually set out to write a pirate book. It just happened. I came up with Violet and thought ‘what’s Violet’s story?’ She’s like women we all know – struggling, trying hard in life but getting nowhere fast – and then her Aunt dies and bequeaths her the strangest thing and Violet thinks “what the?” and “why me?”

I’m a great believer that things – even weird-what-the-hell-is-this-stuff - happens when you least expect it and even though you can’t work out why a new fresh hell is visiting you, there is always a reason and a lot of the time it turns out to be just what you need.

Wanted – one gigolo with a receipt book…

“ya know I can just see you in a motel room - you sitting on the side of the bed, fully dressed, notebook and pen in hand, and him stark naked demonstrating something to you as you take notes!!!!!” – quote from a friend

I have the whole I-don’t-want-a-man-to-annoy-me-thing going on at the moment but I require a man to experiment on and ask questions of. I did have one of these but anyway...so, it’s quite a dilemma for me. Take on a man who will probably irritate me in my current no commitment mode or find one who doesn’t want involvement but does have an ABN (Australian Business number) therefore making him a tax deduction and use him on retainer for this book writing business. I have contacted the ATO (Australian Tax Office) about this research expense. Yes, I can hardy await their response too.

Now, I’m not against romance. Hell no. I just don’t want to settle for Mr Meh when there’s probably someone better lurking out there if I chose to look. And I will. Soonish. So, a gigolo is the perfect solution. Why? Because I pretty much reckon they have seen and done it all and if a erotic romance writer asked them to do – well I won’t say as it would spoil the book I’m writing – something off the wall they probably wouldn’t blink twice. So, I need an unshockable, sensual man who knows women but most importantly is someone I can claim as a tax deduction….oh and he must have a sense of humour, is not clingy and likes to talk as I ask lots of questions. Sex? Not necessary…depends on how good a talker he is. Talkative, smart men are the most sexy.

Oh come on…don’t tell me you haven’t wondered what it would be like to be with such a skilled lover without all the real life complications. Isn’t that why we read erotica? It’s a different slice of life. I often read other Ellora’s Cave writers and think – whoa! How is that possible without her blacking out from hanging upside like that and she must have some thigh muscles to allow him to balance her like that while his tongue licks her…you get my point. Erotica is crazy, wild, no holds barred, it’s a cock-for-god-sake-not-a-love-muscle-sex. Thank god for it.

So, if you are a gigolo with a receipt book, ready to sign a confidentially clause and if I can claim you on tax then email me and we’ll discuss terms….

A gift from the gods...

I opened my email to find a gift from the Cover Gods at Ellora’s Cave. Who’s a lucky girl? I was asked to write a story that was full on Aussie – words and characteristics and to make it true to real Aussie life. Thigh High is it. It’s going to be in an anthology with a bunch of other Aussie writers.

Okay, yeah below is very cute but it made me smile…realism versus romance…

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY?
You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming -- Alan, age 10

No person really decides before they grow up who they're going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you're stuck with -- Kristen, age 10
WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED?
Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then-- Camille, age 10
HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED?
You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids -- Derrick, age 8
WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MUM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON?
Both don't want any more kids -- Lori, age 8

WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE?
Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough-- Lynnette, age 8
On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that Usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date-- Martin, age 10
WHAT WOULD YOU DO ON A FIRST DATE THAT WAS TURNING SOUR?
I'd run home and play dead. The next day I would call all the newspapers and make sure they wrote about me in all the dead columns-- Craig, age 9
WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE?
When they're rich -- Pam, age 7
The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn't want to mess with that- - Curt, age 7
The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It's the right thing to do -- Howard, age 8
IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED?
It's better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them -- Anita, age 9
HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN'T GET MARRIED?
There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn't there? -- Kelvin, age 8
HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK?
Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a dump truck-- Ricky, age 10

Whip me...

..and I’ll smack you in the chops. No seriously – if a man tied me up and did things to me, I swear to god the minute I was loose he’d be a dead man. And dominate me? Forget it. It ain’t gonna happen.

What am I rambling about? After I finished my gym training session with Hugh, I was talking to a friend on my mobile (cell phone) as I staggered to Patrick, my car, all hot, sweaty and red faced. She indicated that training was like a BDSM session with Hugh making me do impossible, hard, hot things that made me ache and sweat and moan…hmmm…this led us on to a discussion on the whole BDSM thing. While I respect some people are into the whole bondage-you-will-do-as-I-say-and-pain-is-pleasure thing – I don’t understand it. No, I don’t believe I’m a prude but I doubt – actually I know – I do not have a submissive bone in my body so BDSM strikes me as odd. Odd is not bad…generally I like odd… but this? Seriously?

Do you think allowing yourself to submit to the pain/pleasure thing is a strength? Or is it more of a need to be wanted and a chance to permit yourself to be out of control? Is it about trusting someone? Is it a power trip for the dominator? Or is it something they need to do to feel strong? Is showing weakness a good thing? Is it sexually titillating or sexually abusive? While is all seems rather tiring to me, it interests me why people do it and read it. I have never tried to write it. Oh sure, occasionally an Amarinda heroine gets herself tied up but on the whole I personally suck at being submissive so I can hardly write something I can’t do. But if you have the answers – let me know…and no, the Hugh thing is all about fitness and I call him a lot of bad names when he is training me so I’m still in control baby. That’s how I like it.

Lickety Split is released today at Ellora's Cave. It's part of the "Creamy" range of specialty books released by EC. Essentially it's about ice cream - how it brings people together and all the lovely, yummy things you can do with it.

The blurb...

What do sex and ice cream have in common? Waverly Astor is about to learn the hard way when she finds herself trapped in a freezer with the hottest hunk she has ever seen. Can lust compete with her true love of ice cream? Is having sex with the hard-bodied god a good idea when they have nothing but hot bodies in common?

Tor Arnett is more than happy to heat up Waverley’s life. She is sex on a stick and he wants to lick every part of her delicious body. The lady is most definitely willing. He has two things on his to-do list—catching a thief and sex with a beautiful woman. Not necessarily in that order.

The abnormality of being normal…

Once more I have been blessed by the Ellora’s Cave cover gods with a beaut cover for Pet Me. It’s exactly – right down to the splashing goldfish in the bowl - what I asked for. Ask – specifically – and you generally get what you want in covers. What I love most about this cover are the smiles. They are just perfect for this story. It’s about a couple who meet and fight over a goldfish called Arthur. Why? It’s involved and kind of silly. What happens? Lot’s of stuff. It’s due out in April next year.

I did get a couple of comments about the man’s body – specifically his chest. One comment was “my boobs aren’t that big”. And the other “that’s not normal for a man.” Ah, I love it when people try to argue the perception of ‘normal’ with me. What is normal? Stuff all#. Are we all supposed to look the same? Have the same chest, boobage and arse per square inch? I don’t want to look like every other bugger^ on the planet. I’ve lived hard, messy and enjoyably to get this body. I don’t want to be perceived as normal. How bloody boring. “Normal” to me means that you are so preoccupied with worrying about fitting in and not thinking outside the box that you become boring. Hence – normal = boring. I have this bizarre notion that we should view people as actual people and not replicas of what we think is 'normal'. And, just throwing this out there, but we should also consider focusing on someone’s words or eyes or smile and not worry if they are a size 4 or have a body that every clone has.

Speaking of bodies and perceptions, I showed the Lickety Split cover – eyes left, pan down - to a male acquaintance. The model has a gorgeous body which I am sure he worked his arse off to get. Anyway this male said to me ‘that’s the body I want’ - no, not in a sexual way – in a way that only a dreamer does. Now, I don’t want to call him superficial – he is – but his life revolves around the way people look. How tiring is that? And the chances of him getting to look like Mr Lickety Split by wishing are Buckley’s* and none. It scares me what twaddle comes out of people’s mouths. Why wish for something that is not going to happen? Be happy that you’re healthy and employed and can put food on the table and pay the bills. A lot of people can’t and I bet they’re not worrying about how their body looks.

So, in summary – be abnormal and enjoy it. All the best people do.

# Stuff all = nothing
^ Bugger = in this case means person – though it is an amazingly flexible word that can mean almost anything in Aussie-speak.
*Buckley’s – Aussie expression – meaning Buckley’s Chance - meaning no chance. Who was Buckley?
William Buckley (1780-1856), a convict who escaped in Victoria in 1803 and lived among the Aborigines there for 30 years (survival in the bush was reckoned no chance).

Lesson number three hundred and twelve...

‘Been making book trailers for the Ellora’s Cave Romanticon convention. Eventually I had to stop and do the cleaning and the laundry…boring… anyway – check ‘em out. I wanted to keep ‘em simple.

So on to the lesson bit…

….if you recall I went and got all silly – okay stupid – over a man. That’s all over now. Why? Because I found my missing brain cells in my sock drawer and I am in my right mind once again…I also realize I have a lot of socks – mainly striped - anyway, in the last week, he, let’s call him Rodney, has been emailing to ask me how I was feeling. Hmmm…like he gives a rat’s arse.

I emailed him back, brain cells intact, and said “stop asking how I am, you don’t give a crap and I don’t want to think about you.” Rodney emailed back this complete and utter load of insincere, immature twaddle basically indicating it was my problem I had feelings for him and to “work through it” and he could see no problem in emailing me as “you are nice.” Yes and yes to points one and two and fuck off I am not to number three. And seriously, who the hell even uses the term ‘work through it’?

I’m just thrilled I didn’t go any further on than I did with Rodney. I know natural instinct and Spidey sense held me back. You know you can say ‘I’m sensitive and caring’ as much as you like but don’t you find the people who have to announce that are anything but?

Whew – I needed to get off my chest. It’s been irritating me all week. Lesson learned and I move on…and how am I? I am stronger and beyond amazing.

How many? Care factor?

I finished up editing my Aussie book, Thigh High, due for release in December with Ellora's Cave. Its part of an Aussie series called Going Down Under. Its Aussie themed books written by real Aussie Ellora’s Cave authors. While I always write as I speak, 80% of the time in my books I have to tone down the Aussie stuff due to the fact that most nationalities don't speak as bloody lovely as we Aussies do. Thigh High is set in a small outback town and it’s full on Aussie. But then, that’s who I am. It's how I speak. I have added a glossary though to help translate some of the words.

Anyway, during the editing a friend and I discussed age and sexual experience and what is deemed "normal" for a woman. My personal opinion? Normal is what's normal for the individual. As always I believe age is irreverent regardless what the subject is. Lot's of sexual experience? Happy for you. Hardly any? That's okay. None? I see no problem with that. It annoys me no end when we try to pigeon-hole people into what we think they should be or should have done at this age or that. Why? Are we so perfect that we can pick at others? Well – no.

While all my heroines are smart arse women who have lived life and aren’t about to be messed around by anyone, all of them have different sexual experiences. Some have a hell of a past, others have limited it to one or two lovers, while a couple have been virgins. I think about the character of the heroine. Who is she? How do I want her to be understood by the readers? I don’t think ‘well, she’s 35 and she should have had 7.6 lovers by now ‘cause that’s normal.’ To me, it's irrelevant how many the heroine’s slept with. The main point of the story – the romance – is the romance. It’s about the concept that two people have looked at each other and thought, “This is the one.” Isn’t that why we read romance? We want to believe in that one true love? Is it really important who they have slept or how many?

Romance books cry out for a happy ending. A person or a character’s past is just not important. It’s the trials and tribulations of getting these two people together that is. And I have to ask why a man's sexual experience doesn’t come into question as much as a woman's? I never get comments or hear discussions about who the hero may have slept with or how many at his age and is that normal?

So sex in romance books – she loves him. He loves her. In the end that’s all I need to know.

Rambulations…chapter 67…

Stuff…

Here’s the cover for Lickety Split. It’s out early August. Isn’t he lovely…er, I mean isn’t the cover lovely? I’m most pleased with him…it…the cover…you know. What’s Lickety Split about? Well it’s about ice cream and all the lovely things you can do with it…and you can eat it as well.

And ‘struth – I also got a contract on the pure Aussie book I sent off. They said they wanted pure Aussie speak and characters so I took ‘em at their word – and stone the crows they said yes. I did put a glossary in so maybe that helped. Just think if you buy the book you’ll all be speaking true blue Aussie in no time, cobber, sheila, mate, Bruce. It’s just bonza.

Then - I got an email from someone who would not know if their arse was on fire. No seriously. You would have to tap them on the shoulder and say ‘excuse me but you’re bottom appears to be in flames. You may want to consider doing something about that.’ It made my so angry that I simply refuse to deal with it. Just say no to idiots is my theory. Breathe in breathe out…ignore the drongo.

Defibne me not...

· define - specify: determine the essential quality of
· define - give a definition for the meaning of a word; "Define `sadness'"
· define - determine the nature of; "What defines a good wine?"
· define - show the form or outline of; "The tree was clearly defined by the light"; "The camera could define the smallest object"
· define - specify: decide upon or fix definitely; "fix the variables"; "specify the parameters"

I don’t get this need people seem to have of late to announce they are ‘defined’ or ‘need to be defined’ by something. What is that about?

- My job defines me
- He defines me
- I must find something to define my place in the universe.

I find the whole defining thing exhausting. When did we stop being our human, hazy, less than defined selves? Yes, I know it’s all about ambition and getting ahead and belonging to something that makes you feel good, smarter or the whole goals deal - but holy crap you can do all that without having to announce you have or will define yourself. All this specifying and determining and outlining your plans and goals and needs sounds painful. I worry that we are losing our characters and our quirkiness in the black and white world of defining. Why can’t we just continue to colour outside the lines and aim for okay or pretty good or wander into fantastic and be comfortable with that? Where has the surprise gone in life?

Maybe it’s just me but I like hazy, quirky people who lack definition and clarity and seem to stumble from one thing to another sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing. I like the whole human experience where people are less than perfect and just do the best they can without worrying about fitting in with the whole trend of finding definition. To my mind nothing or no one can define you. You are who you are. You are unique and I think that’s pretty damn good and nothing can beat individuality. Define me? I’m just fine as I am.

I define nothing. Not beauty, not patriotism. I take each thing as it is, without prior rules about what it should be.” -- Bob Dylan

Damn straight Bob.

Plots and knots....

My vampire romance - Run the Gantlet - yes Gantlet - not gauntlet – yes - god knows, gantlet is the correct term - trust me....is out today at Ellora’s Cave. Let the pigeons loose.

The blurb…

One thousand years ago Caitriona of Gaunt cursed a future kinswoman. Eloise is the last Gaunt woman standing. Her fate? To fall in love with a vampire and run a gantlet to prove her love. But will lust be good enough?

Eloise was determined never to cross the path of a vampire—until she met the hard-bodied and delicious Arrow and fell for the hot, sexy vamp. One minute she hates him and the next she’s in his arms. And that’s not her biggest problem. They have to pass seven challenges to stay alive—if they can keep their hands off each other long enough.

Running the gantlet is just a side issue for Arrow. His biggest test is making Eloise fall in love with him. He craves the taste of her innocent body and sweet blood. Seducing her with sin and sex is the answer and he’s not about to let any challenge stand in his way.

Go sin and sex….

Not only that….

I was only just mentioning a day or so ago I didn't have a cover for Fear of Being – and then whizz bang presto - I have one now. Isn’t it excellent? Thank you Whiskey Creek Press Torrid cover goddesses. The book is out on August in both e-book and paperback.

That blurb….

Spencer Grace is living her nightmares. No longer content to haunt her dreams, an evil creature called the red man invades her world and turns it upside down. He knows things about her that no one else does. He feeds on her fears. He wants her for his own. Spencer is fighting for her life. She will not let this bastard win.

But this creature is not the only one new to her life. Two men, each with their own agenda, come to her. Both want her body and her heart. Both are prepared to share Spencer to allow her a long dreamt of desire. But in the end only one can have her. Who is stronger?

But can Spencer believe either man? Hot sex and fantasy is one thing but trust is another. It’s no coincidence that evil and love have come into her life at the same time.

Spooky…

And also…

….in an attempt to de-knot-ify – I’m sure it’s a real word somewhere - and relax I went and had a massage. I was at the gym doing my usual circuit of hauling my arse around, feeling so tense that I could break into a gazillion pieces and it hit me. I need a massage. Actually it was a big flashy sign that came on the screen in front of me at the gym. "Need to relax?" Oh-bloody-frigging-hell-damn-for-god-sake-does-a-chicken-have-lips-yes-I-bloody-do.

Now, the concept of a massage is a really odd thing for me to think of as I am very, very picky on who touches me. I'm not a tactile person per se. Touch me without advance warning and I may just snot you...no seriously. It's just the way I am - yet I adore me.

So I went and got massaged. I apparently have lots of big hard knots in my shoulders, back and my calf muscles and funnily enough – well I found it funny – I have tight arse muscles. Oh, how that made me laugh. My arse is pure flab but somehow - what do you know - muscle has snuck into my fat buns – go figure. It was pointed out to me by the fantastic masseuse that I also have a problem with relaxing and lying still on the table – correct – I suck at that - and I am scary tight all over – correct – well, if you are going to do something you may as well do it to extremes I say. Yes, I’m going back. I need to. Even without her telling me that I knew it. Am I relaxed? No, I’m actually rather stiff and sore as hell. It will take some more work but I’m worth the effort. I just hope my tight arse muscles don’t disappears…what a bummer that would be…yeah, bad pun.

Odds and sods...

The cover gods sent me another beaut cover for I Don’t Think So. Again, it is exactly what I asked for. Big kiss to the Ellora’s Cave cover gods. What’s I Don’t think So About? A warlock who has to subdue a woman who’s not about to be put in her place.

Review…

Fear of Being is an erotic novel unlike any other I have read. With hot sex scenes, a paranormal twist, and a happily-ever-after, it’s a must read for 2009 – just be prepared to take a cold shower. Ms. Jones has created a book in which women can be found desirable regardless of their weight. It was a refreshing change to see a heroine who wasn’t a size 4. An action packed tale, Fear of Being is sure to have you turning page after page waiting to see what happens next.

Available August 2009 by Whiskey Creek Press Torrid
http://thenovelblog.com/

Yeah, Fear of Being is not due until August with Whiskey Creek Torrid – I'm awaiting the cover - but I got a review already and it’s a good one – evidence I don’t suck completely…at least not today…maybe tomorrow. So Fear of Being – what’s it about? It’s a ménage/romance/creepy book based on a recurring nightmare I keep having…yeah – weird huh? I never said I was normal…

A moment to vent…

Does it make you mad when you pour out your feelings to someone and they just don’t get it? You say things that are so intensely personal and make you want to cry and they just say something so dumb that you just want to scream. Do you just sit there and think –
are you even listening? Did you ever listen? Was it all just an act for you? How dumb was I?

Do you notice that never happens in romance novels? I can see why people read ‘em. It’s because the hero isn’t as thick as two short planks and although he may be average and flawed he at least understands that the heroine just needs to get things out into the open and that it’s not always about him – it’s about her and her need to be selfish for five seconds and just say stuff so she can move on and breathe a little easier. Do you notice the hero never fobs her off? He listens. Why is that? Because the majority of romance books are written by women or by men who have a clue. They get women. They understand that not everything is an e=mc2 equation that has to be solved in an a-b-c-manner and that emotion isn’t always rational and that sometimes the need to just get something off your chest is more important then trying to keeping everything on a even keel.

I don’t hate men. I just understand them less and less as the years go by. I don’t want a man to solve my problems. I would just like one man, without an agenda, who listens and actually appreciates, and not necessarily agrees with, what I say. I am beginning to believe he only exists in romance novels. This probably accounts for the fact the less people marry and more people live alone – check your local census - and yet romance novels are always popular – it’s all because e=mc2 is not the solution to every problem. Actual listening is. So, when you want to scream, read a book. It’s easier than dealing with a brick wall.
