Honour beats greed...

“Know yourself and you will win all battles”
― Sun Tzu

So, I’ve been placed in a fight not of my choosing. But I will fight it because the words and the reputation of a good man demand it. I will fight to the end. I expect nothing to be left. That’s okay with me. I don’t do this for me. I do it because honour beats greed any day.

Get on with it…

My 79 year old father has cancer again. We’re not getting emotional about it. We’re all just talking about it in a way that it’s just one more battle to face and deal with. We’re not hard, unfeeling people but like many, who been through hard, shitty times we’re damn tough and have learned to confront the impossible and the ghastly and get on with it.

Cancer is the most massive wake up call you can get. We rise to meet the challenge because cancer wants a fight and fuck it we’ll give it one.

In your face...

Today is Relay for Life day in Cairns. It’s an overnight baton relay for 18 hours between teams of people who have sought sponsorship money for the Cancer Council. Yes, we could just ask people for money and not walk and not spend a cold winter’s night in a tent waiting for the baton to be passed to us. That would be simple. Easy. The thing is cancer isn’t either of those things. It’s a shitty, horrible disease that robs us of people we love and friends we will never see again. It devastates families and tests the courage and endurance of those fighting for their lives. So, there are events like this that raise funds to fight it, which shoves the spotlight on it to remind people that cancer is a killer, to celebrate those who have fought it, those who have survived and those we have lost.

No, correct. You don’t have to care or give money. That’s your choice. No, you don’t have to explain to me that you ‘don’t know anyone who has had cancer’ so it doesn’t concern you.  Your conscience is your own. All I ask is spend two minutes of your busy life thinking about what you would do if you or someone you love was confronted by cancer. Maybe then events like Relay for Life would be understandable for those who ask me why bother trying to 'pick up $5.00 here and there.' Am I shoving this in your face? Well Cancer’s in your face stuff. There’s no time to be subtle about it.

…all right for fighting…

How much time do you want to spend fighting with them?” Author Anny Cook asked me that in an email today. It’s a really good question that applies to so many things in life and no one particular incident.

How far should we push something to get what we know is right and fair? Why should we accept crap? Why can’t we ask for more and better? Why can’t we challenge authority? It’s certainly an Aussie thing to do and it’s the Jones family manta – but every so often I do wonder why I bother trying to fight nitwits and fools. Some times it’s better to walk away and just let those who will never understand you or who oppose you go sit and spin…

Oh, but how I love a good fight…I expect another one will turn up soon…that’s also a Jones thing…
