I had to sign an affidavit as part of my job. It’s not an unusual occurrence. It’s actually a pain in the bum as you have to find an official person to witness your signature. Anyhow, the person I found to co-sign held out a bible to me to swear on before I signed. I said no thanks. While I respect people’s rights to believe in whatever they want, as an atheist I find it hypocritical to swear on a bible. How believable would that be? So I declined. They were stunned and unsure how to proceed. The thing is religion and truth are not necessarily the same thing are they? Look at all those children who were molested by clergy. How honest and truthful is that?
Truth? It comes from within and no printed book is going to scare me into being honest. In this day and age surely the concept of such old fashioned swearing on a bible infringers on people’s rights and civil liberties.

Good for you, for sticking with your values. Though, I would expect nothing less.
