The arvo email…

We have a critical situation that needs to be rectified immediately. Please advise immediate course of action to avoid catastrophe.
Is it really critical?
Well, pretty critical.
Catastrophe?
Sorta – well, they think so.
They?
It’s a pushy woman.
Oh, her. Can it wait until next week?
Sure. I don’t want to interrupt you guys if you’re busy.
Yeah, we have a couple of meetings tomorrow and I’m away for a couple of days after that.
Going somewhere nice?
Nope, just lazing around at home.
Okay, well, this can wait.
Are you sure?
Yeah, it’s only pretty critical – not like its super critical.
Well, yeah, super critical could be done but pretty critical is well, just pretty…you know?
Yeah. Let ‘em wait.
Er hello? I’m cc’d on the email.
Oh
Oh
So I’m thinking this needs to be rectified now as worlds will indeed collide. While I understand there is protocol, havering, corporate bullshitting, work avoidance and navel gazing involved and clearly I’m not high enough up the food chain to understand this at your level, all I can say is please do what I want now.
We can do it tomorrow

Yeah, we planned to do it tomorrow.
Of course you did.

Cheer, followed by going home….

So, I got this this work email today of scenarios of what the office would do in the case of five different scenarios. It was a long document with intense instructions that looked like they would take a lot of time to read through. Oh hard. I’m not good with instructions so I skimmed them. Essentially, three pages of corporate bumpf came down to these questions:

1. Police halt access to the office and advise no entry for 48 hours. What do you do?
Cheer, followed by going home.

2. What action would you take if the computer network was down and unlikely to come back up for 24 hours?
Cheer, followed by going home.

3. No electricity? Your course of action is?
Cheer, followed by going home.

4. Car crashes into the building making work impossible due to damage. Your immediate response? Cheer, followed by going home.

5. There is a siege outside the front door of the office. Cheer - use the back door - followed by going home.

I mean, come on. Seriously? Who makes up these dumb arsed questions and what response do they expect from plebs? Well, gee, I would stick around for 24-48 hours, outside the office, dodging possible bullets waiting for the glorious moment I would be allowed back into the office, no matter if it was midnight or raining, to do my work because I’m just that damn dedicated.

Corporate people – justifying their existence through crap, useless documents.

Zorro...that's me...

Of late, I’ve taken to signing for things delivered to the office as Zorro. Why? Why not? Added to that none of the delivery guys give a crap what I sign as their job is done once I scrawl on the electronic tablet they present me.

So, this week I have been Zorro. I’m thinking I may be Batgirl next week…

I’m just the Admin chick…

So, a  high faluting manager type nonghead from  Sydney called me in a panic about an engineering structural change and what did I know about it? Had I sent it? Passed it on to anyone? Been asked about it? Er, that would be no, no, no and fuck no man, I’m doing personal printing I don't have time for work stuff today. I also added that as an office manager I managed the officey type thingys and didn’t deal with feral engineering people who, in essence, were quite yucky and reminded me of pubic hair. He then said he would send me info on the engineering thing. I pointed out if he had the info why was he asking me about it because frankly that seemed pretty damn dumb to me.

Anyway, so he sent it to me and said can you format this – he couldn’t – and send it out to everyone. I said sure, whatever. Everyone? Yes everyone.  So I sent it out to everyone. Five minutes later I get a panicked phone call asking me had I sent it out to everyone? Yes.  Every single person in every single office? Yes. Dead silence over the phone before he said did you read it? Er no, I don’t care about metal things with screws and holes punched in them. Did I see the mistake they made in it in it? No. He seemed relieved by this until I mentioned that as a non engineering person if I had of read that sticking steel girders together with spit and sticky tape was the new trend I would have said ‘whatever.’ Silence again. Are you there?  Can we recall the email, was the panicked response.   Sure, but I lets face it that’s not all that effective is it because the minute you send a recall out there like "Amarinda Jones would like to recall the email entitled ‘Spit – the new wonder glue for steel super structures’ due to a boo-boo in it” pretty much everyone is going to want to read that email to find out why the recall. What will we do when they ring and ask about the email? My standard defence to everything in the office? “I’m just the Admin chick man, I don’t know anything.”  Did they ring? Yeah. I said my line and transferred them onwards and upwards as a good admin chick does. I had printing to do.

You know when you’re totally bored at work and you start having thoughts like…

- What would happen if Martians landed at the office looking for intelligent life? Would they be disappointed?
- Do beautiful people get bored shitless or are they in jobs as beautiful as themselves and everything is – well – beautiful?
- Are beautiful people shallow?
- Are non-beautiful people deep?
- River deep, mountain high – a profound emotional image or just stating the facts?
- If a zombie hunter came in and rounded up all the office zombies and took them away in chains would I notify corporate office first or have lunch and then mention it in an email the next day supposing I remembered to?
- Can you die from not having sex?
- Can you die from too much sex?
- Are vampires picky when it comes to blood type? Was that mentioned in Twilight?
- If mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy, what about cows? Why don’t they get mentioned? Is it discrimination? If so how do we combat that?
- Are boring people born boring or do that have boredom thrust upon them?
- Thrust or parry?

And the boredom beat goes on…

Interim-dude....

So, the last manager at work resigned – actually he was pushed because he screwed up in monumentally, superbly stupid, inane, fuck-wit-ish ways and we have a new interim manager dude looking after the place until they get all their ducks in a row and employ someone else to oversee the circus known as our office. The interim-dude pulled me aside, shut the door and said ‘what’s with the bell on the wall?’ Well, if you have been following my blog/facebook on Quasimodo and his need to ring a bell or  have read Accidentally in Love, you’d know the guy who got sacked absolutely insisted on having a frigging bell he could ring in the office to generate excitement. No, he wasn't 6 years old… at least I’m pretty sure…anyway we had some knock-down-drag ‘em out fights over this bell. So, I explained the situation to interim-dude. He looked at me like I was mad, and that’s a fair call in many ways, however his basic line of thought is the bell is wrong, wrong, wrong and we’re all grown ups and this is not kindergarten. Correct.

So, riddle me this, why did it take over a year  before the corporate dudes, where interim-dude comes from, realize that the shit-fest that had become our office had become a dangerous, business situation? The answer? If you’re a man in business where other men are in charge, they look after their penises and other men’s penises and refuse to believe someone who has a penis can be as useful as a chocolate fireguard. Penises – very useful things in the right hands…that's why a woman need to be in charge. She knows how to direct a penis.

Privileged....

So, I walked into work and pointed to the manager and said, I need to talk to you. Yeah, I was pissed about something he had said and me, being me, wasn’t gonna let it go until I had said what was on my mind. Anyway, he sat down and I told him what I thought and then waited for him to speak. His response? “I acknowledge what you say and I feel very privileged that you are direct enough to share your feelings on this matter.” No, he wasn't taking the piss. He actually speaks like that hence the reason he does my head in on a daily basis. He then said "Blah, blah, blah-de-blah-lollipop-twinkle-toes-snow-cone-wanker-bell-ringing-fest-let's dance with pixies." Or something like that. Sometimes I wonder if I've walked into one of my stories...and yes, he is being written into the next one. Luckily real life inspires me.

Set the bar…

I walked into the kitchen at work the other day and there were about a dozen grungy, old coffee cups littering the kitchen bench. I walked out of the kitchen and made an announcement to the office staff along that lines of whoever had dumped the coffee cups out here needs to ‘get their arse back into the kitchen and clean them.’ This was met by a quiet ‘Okay.' It’s a predominantly male office. Before I turned up as Office Manager the previous person in the position used to wash up and – shock-frigging-horror-no-fucking-way used to make everyone coffee when they asked for it. And let's not even talk about the cake baking 'for the boys'. I think her name was Door Mat. This all stopped when I came into power. My point is this. Male dominated offices need to be whipped in to shape. Men have no bloody idea about women so give them a clue with a capital C. Establish the rules. I will not clean, cook, fetch or carry. I will not be spoken to like I’m an idiot. I can verbally, in a polite, succinct way, kick you arse from here to the front door if you push me so think before you speak. If you allow yourself to be treated like a domestic slave in the office once, it becomes a pattern and other women who follow up suffer for it. Don’t do it.

Really, I’m a sweet little thing…

No excuse...

There’s this woman at work who gets all emotional over the over use of staples, treats everyone like they’re 6 years old and insists she knows more than everyone else and she will argue to the death other it and go into a snit if she loses that fight. In short, she is a pain in the arse bully with no respect for others. Someone told me yesterday that she had a hard childhood and that’s the reason behind her behavior. Ah no – that’s not a reason. That’s a made for television movie with B grade actors. No one I know had a Brady Bunch childhood. Stuff happened to everyone but you get by. You learn from it, toughen up and move into adulthood. By 35 you should have worked that out. You don’t use that as an excuse for being a rude, condescending, stick-up-the-arse cow for the rest of your life. It doesn’t wash with me. Grow up. No one owes you. If anything you owe it to yourself to make your own life better. Oh yeah...there's trouble in River City...

Figures….

Today at the Acme Dance Shoe company where I work …

Panic stations…

Executive type person – we don’t have the figures!!!! Why not? We need them or the world will end

Amarinda (who wants an alibi just in case the world ends) – I told you why - you said that was okay to hold off.

Executive - Oh right - yes you did - well can you do them now?

Amarinda – (ok - puke – swear – boring - kick the wall – think evil thoughts about dreary figures) - Yes, if someone can run through how to do them with me (cause they look like Swahili to me and I may fall asleep – hit my head on the desk and not come in to work tomorrow)

Executive – Ask X

X - I'm not sure I don’t do them - Y does

Y - Not me – ask Z

Z - this whole set up is stupid and wrong and no wonder worlds collide and we’re all doomed.

Amarinda (I’ll-give-you-worlds-colliding-why-don’t-I-have-a-bottle-of-wine-at-my- desk?) Great whatever - if I do this and that and swirl the figure around some and make the heading blue and pretty pink and put a cherry on top is that essentially correct?

Z - Well yeah but it's not the fosby-flop sooky-la-la expediential monotone grey and white and anal way we've done it in the past.

Amarinda – Well, fuck it - there’s a new sheriff in town baby and we like colour. Colour confuses and hides stuff. We like that.

Z – you’ll go to hell

Amarinda – more than likely

Weird arsed week….

First up I must mention that Attitude Angel is out at Whiskey Creek Torrid. I forgot it was released – bad author-hand-slap-hanging-head-in-shame. I was supposed to promote the arse out of it until you were all sick to death of it and said ‘bugger off, we’ll frigging buy it if you shut already.’ Ok – so that’s done – click on the cover below to buy or read on MacDuff…It’s been a week out of the Twilight Zone. Weird things have happened left, right and centre and I’ve been left thinking ‘huh’ and ‘what the?’

So, here’s the thing, suddenly I’m a manager with my own office – picture musical chairs and you’re the only one who’s playing. The music stops and you look at the chair and you think ‘should I sit?’ But you do and it starts off this amazing chain reaction of responsibility that you think ‘well fuck, I’m a grown up.’

Then there’s the gossip at work. X stormed out of the office because Y is a ball breaking cow – no, I’m not Y this time – and there is uproar and drama and hours are spent trying to determine the facts of what may or could have or did happen. No work gets done because well, how can it? You have to discuss all the possible variations of what could have happened to ascertain 79% of the truth. I’m completely exhausted from all that. Then there’s the staff who are pissed at the sudden office changes, someone took all my black pens – I only write in black – extremely annoying – how does anyone write in blue - and I only got to have one coffee and because of that how can I be expected to stamp things with the right date and not upside down?

And then there are people you want to hate and ignore and you just can’t ‘cause they get all puppy dog on you and well…you know…sigh…its’ hard to be a bitch sometimes…

I think the most normal thing of the week was planning a bank robbery with author Anny Cook and the Frog Queen…thank god for rational people like this.

Snoozefest…

I had been putting off forever sorting out a massive amount of filing at work. Why? Well the words ‘massive amount of filing’ should be a indicator of reluctance and also because filing is beyond boring. Besides, I don't like to either think at work or waste my vowels and consonants on filing. But I had to bite the bullet and file. How pukeable.

Lots of people asked me 'what are you doing?' Duh. Anyway, my answer varied from person to person - this means some people believe I was removing all files that started with R because “we as a company were no longer dealing with the letter R” - or counting the number of boy names and dividing by the percentage of girl names to come up with a number to give management. Many others stopped by to tell me that I was wearing a purple shirt and jeans just like the receptionist and another colleague. I responded “didn't you get the memo about wearing purple today? No? Oh, well I would just plead ignorance if you’re asked." Yes, I like to be confusing.

So, the boring, pukeable filing. Is it alphabetically correct? I doubt it. I lost consciousness somewhere after H or maybe it was G so I can confidently say it is a hell of a mess. But that's okay because if someone can’t find something - usually a man - I say “Let me have a 'girl' look and I will find it straight away.” And I do, eventually, and they are impressed. It’s all smoke and mirrors and pure, dumb luck.

This is dedicated to all office workers but particularly A & D in the northern branch office. I still beat you out the door.

To bitch or not to bitch? That is the question...

I was asked at work today what would I do if another staff member confronted me and called me a bitch. I just smiled. Please don’t be shocked but I have been called a bitch before. Most strong minded women have. It does not bother me. It takes skill to be a bitch and not let it bring you down. Anyway, this manager was serious so I put on my serious, caring face – I keep it in my pocket for serious occasions. I also have my intensely interested face, my bland non committal face, my I’m really happy to be here face and my woo hoo its knock off time face in there as well. It can get tricky sometimes if I’m not paying attention. I don’t want to be wearing my woo hoo face when someone wants me to do a sucky job as they may think I am dedicated and that would be wrong. Anyway, where was I? Yes – the bitch thing – now management throw these questions at you, as you know, to see how calm and responsible you are. I rattled off some crap about handling it in a professional, non personal manner to diffuse the situation and to not create gossip - but hells bells everyone knows someone walking up to someone else and using
the ‘b’ word for all to hear is going to spread like wildfire through an office. Anyway, whatever I said was the right thing. I can act so normal sometimes it frightens me. However I am not against people speaking their mind. I know – big surprise. But I believe if you are so wrought up you have to call someone a bitch then do it, get it out in the open, sort it and move on. It’s all the seething tensions that lie below a surface that make a workplace difficult.

For an example of this I go back to Promptel (code name for crap phone company). Many moons ago, myself, Ethel and another person I’ll call Celia used to sit together in the office. It was a terrible grouping of people because we were all bad to the bone. Anyway, Ethel likes to have the radio on at work and she likes to sing to it – loud. When you are used to working with someone I find you tend to switch off to easy listen music being wailed in your ear. Others aren’t though. We used to sit near a woman called, er Angie - anyway Angie was your typical psychopath. Every office has one. If there was the need for a bunny boiling, duco scratching, light fingered, sexual deviant then it was Angie. She had a problem with us. I suspect because we had a lot of fun and we weren’t male. She liked to sit near males for obvious reasons. She also hated Ethel’s singing.
Now, I was not averse to telling Ethel to shut up – she would swear at me and then be quiet for 5 minutes before she started singing again. Angie never said anything to us, she just built up the rage until one day it boiled over into what we called ‘Highlighter-gate.’ What happened? Pretty silly now but she snapped and threw a highlighter pen – a big thick one – in our direction. It missed my nose by inches and slammed into the dividing board of out desks. She then looked at us as if to say ‘what are you going to do now huh?’ Being in a call centre as we were, doing something like that does not go unnoticed and dozens of heads popped up over dividers like meerkats. Most people did not like Angie and most assumed I would snot her. (snot = punch her in the nose). I don’t hit. Words are more effective.

Naturally, this whole incident stopped Ethel singing and Celia and I just looked at each other in surprise. I do have a wild temper but over the years I have learnt to control it. I just stood up and walked away as I knew whatever I did next would be talked about for days. I could see as I passed by that Angie was shaking with rage. I’m not about to tackle a psycho without a net. I knew her history. I also knew I had to get the true version of what happened to management before the wild stories I knew would break out. Now, I personally love the elaborate stories that people make up but not when they have the potential to harm me or friends. They broke out anyway due to a woman call, Nellie – nasty cow that she was. Thankfully I got in with my story before she did and her exaggerated story of all four of us in a punch up only made her look stupid – which was a bonus for us as we did not like Nellie. Hello Nellie, if you’re reading this…still an interfering cow are you?

So what is the point of this ramble? Um…let me read back…maybe it’s about thinking for a split second before you go with your first reaction at work. Maybe your second reaction will save you arse or maybe it’s about not sitting with people who sing along to the radio or maybe it’s about the fact that work can be a war zone and you have to be prepared for the highlighter pens that get thrown at you. Or maybe it’s just a Tuesday ramble on.

Just heard …
….on the radio that Paul McCartney was ordered by the High Court to pay Heather Mills some $50 million as a settlement and that she was ‘very happy’ with this. Well yes, I suspect she would be. Money can indeed buy happiness. I would personally be ecstatic at 50 mill. Now, I don’t care if you are a celebrity or not, I tend to think if you have assets that you have worked hard for then a pre-nup is a must. Yes, I know it’s not romantic but the bottom line, to my mind, if you both go into a relationship with eyes open and cards on the table, a pre-nup is a realistic thing and both parties should be able to see that. Love is great but protecting yourself is a must. Any thoughts?
