Sex...meh...

The truth is writing sex is hard and no writer, despite what they may want and tell you to believe in their 'about me' section, looks like the woman in this picture. Sex is hard to write and writers are generally people in sweat pants or shorts and t-shirts or pyjamas, their hair screwed up on their head, a pen behind their ear, wearing smudged specs as they try and think hot, dirty thoughts to type frantically before they forget what the hell he did to her with what, all at the same time as drinking too much coffee or coke or chocolate milk while kicking, with their unpolished toenail, the discarded sandwich, on a chipped plate, on the floor, where they put it because the desk is for scraps of paper with half scribbled notes on it all about sex. Just so you know when you read sex again…

Him. Me. Sex. Go....

My god, it’s hard to write sex at your desk at the day job when the phones keep ringing and people want to know stuff and all you really know at that moment is what he is doing to her on the word document before you. I find writing sex mechanical. You have to pay attention to where everyone's hands are and what they're thinking and feeling and if you had to do that in real life you'd never have sex because he should know where his hands are and she should - like any real woman - know what she's doing because sex is a feel-good no brainer. Him. Me. Sex. Go. I'm a doer not a writer nor am I one of those authors who wait for their 'muse' or their characters to talk to them. God damn it you're having sex - now go! Tell the muse to piss off and be all sensitive and validated somewhere else.

I think you see my point. It’s valid to write sex at the day job because all work is equal and if you don’t get caught it’s all justified. And if you're dumb enough to get caught? Lie, burst into tears or fainting might be good.

I rest my case.

Sex...

In, out, over, under, down, up, pant, moan, groan, ohh…ahh…oh god…yes, yes, yes…harder, faster, slower…condom…no condom, suck, swallow, spit…come, fake, faint…do you think next door heard us? Yes? Excellent….lordy, it’s hard to write sex sometimes. I was talking to a friend and she mentioned there were 64 sexual positions. I said most people would be flat out doing 4 or 5. Are we non adventurous or do we just know what we like? And 64? Who actually counts? I believe if you’re counting you’re doing it wrong.

So I was having this marathon sex session…

…it was all going along very nicely. Everyone was happy and excited and it was steamy hot and completely out of control. My concentration level was intense as I only wanted one thing and I wanted it then and there, fast and thorough...oh yeah baby…but then it happened…damn…I got a leg cramp and forgot about sex and orgasms as I yelped and jumped up, knocking over a glass of soda water, glass smashing to the ground. The moment was completely ruined. ‘Ever notice how liquid seems to go everywhere and you can only ever find the last piece of glass when you stand on it?

Anyway, after cleaning up and finding a band aid, sex was the last thing I had on my mind. Shame that. The hero was all hot and hard and the heroine was thinking “well, hell, maybe I misjudged him and naked he looks mighty fine…” Yeah, I was writing. Nah, I’m too pure for marathon sex…sort of…kinda…

Sex huh? It's never straight forward and you have to be in the mood for it. And writing it? Frig it's hard. There is so much to remember when you’re actually writing it as opposed to doing it. Next time you have sex, stop and think for a moment how to write it. And it's not just about the female point of view – writing that’s easy. It's the male that’s hard…so to speak. Does any woman really understand how a man’s mind works? I think not. I asked a male friend about the whole ejaculation thing and what he felt in the moment. Did I feel weird asking? Hmm, no, because I wanted a man who would actually tell me the truth and not give me some fairy story about ‘staying power’ and ‘iron-like control’ and ‘going all night’ and having the ‘strength of superman’…I mean come on ...and men think women fake it. Anyway this is a cleaned up/abbreviated version of his response…most interesting in a strangely scientific way…

"I find that it starts with a tingling feeling in the scrotum/testicles and then the physical swelling takes over. As said before they are funny things and tend to grow in a straight line which generally requires some degree of adjustment in that area to keep things comfortable….As for the actual 'coming'. The general rhythmic motion of the lips/mouth/hand/anus/breasts across the top half of the shaft generates the required sensation to build up the flow of semen to the scrotum area and once the point is reached where sufficient intensity is reached the prostrate takes over and pulses the semen out through the shaft and in doing so creates the orgasm for the man. The feeling is generally for 15 - 20 seconds and leaves the knees a bit weak and the ability to hold the erection somewhat more difficult. At this point it is difficult to keep the rhythm up as the cock becomes limper and the desire to continue pumping somewhat weakened."

Hard to describe really - ask me something specific and I will elaborate on that."

My response to that – “15 – 20 seconds…jeez romance heroes last longer…”

Men…funny creatures yet fascinating…and yes, I did ask more specific stuff…but that’s another blog.

What? Sunday again...oh crap Monday tomorrow...

A friend sent me these Maxines this morning – I love Maxine. I want to grow up to be exactly like her. I believe I am on the way
It is cold here…yes, sure, it’s nearly winter but that doesn’t make it right. It’s also windy enough to blow a dog off a leash.

Update on Mervina the possum. I left the lights on under the house last night and will again tonight, as per my wise Editor’s suggestion. See? Editors have to deal with all manner of problems – anyway there was no sign of Mervina today. I suspect she is pissed off about not being able to wander around in the dark knocking things over – nor has she been able to sleep today as I kept the lights on. Jump out and scare me will you? I think not. You’re going bush whether you like it or not fatso.

I was talking to a reader who said that she wished she had the ‘gift of imagination’ so she could write. No one lacks imagination. It’s just a matter of belief in yourself and your abilities. As for writing? I have said this before but I believe anyone can write. I am sure there are probably
some authors that would disagree with this sentiment. But I think anyone that has a voice and spirit of their own can bang out a book. The only thing it takes is time and patience. If you can find both then have a go and write. No writers I know are any smarter than anyone else and you may just surprise yourself. Do it.

So, I would like to say I did something exciting today but I didn’t. The highlight was putting a colour through my hair – I have no idea what my natural colour is any more. I’m sure it’s not toxic red. And I schlepped around in my purple chenille dressing gown and rainbow fuzzy slippers for a large percentage of the day while I wrote the continuing story on from Tantalizing Tilly (coming soon from Ellora’s Cave) – though I have left out huge chunks of sex…in the book that is. I personally don’t do sex any more. I prefer chocolate and schlepping around in purple chenille. Same feeling anyway – instant gratification
and warmth. Anyway I typed in the usual notes on the WIP to myself – ‘insert sex here’. It’s hard to write sex sometimes. I also think that cold doesn’t help as things shrivel and it’s too cold for any of my characters to be naked so I am giving us all a break. What else did I do? Well, I de-trashy-fied a manuscript that a publisher wanted to see. What is de-trashy-fy? Yes, it is a made up word. Thanks for noticing.

With writing erotic romance - and I am sure I’ll get myself in trouble saying this but what the hell, that’s who I am – there are different types of erotica which I am sure you know. And no, I’m not saying any particular author writes porn so get a grip if you feel otherwise. Anyway, I write differently for different publishers. Well, it makes sense doesn’t it? Different publishers have
different markets. Anyway, I wrote this one piece of work that was probably – okay not probably, - was a lot hotter and also trashier than a lot of my usual work. I planned to give it to a particular publisher, different to my normal one, but in the end chose not to because I wasn’t happy with how trashy it was. Sure, it probably would have sold quite well but I think there are times in your life when money is not the most important thing. Yes – gasp – shock – horror. Who knew I would ever say that? I feel dizzy now. But there it is - I had a moment of integrity and I decided to de-trashy-fy the book. It’s still hot and it’s still ménage but I don’t wince as I read it.

And yes, there is always a debate over what is erotic romance and what is soft porn. I have my own thoughts as I know anyone reading this does. That’s good. Wouldn’t it be boring if we all thought the same? I respect anyone’s right to read and write what they like. I personally will draw the line. I wonder what Maxine would say? Hmmm
So that’s Sunday…other then ignoring the doorbell, answering the odd phone call and as writing requires, eating junk food, that was the sum total of my existence. Oh yes, and I bought an Armitage Army t-shirt –for charity – because every Armitage Army soliderette has to support RA. So yes, quel non- excitement. What do thou doest today?

I suspect Anny could talk about sex on her blog – not sure. I know Kama Sutra Lovers will be out very soon through Ellora’s Cave - it will singe your eyelashes together. I have read snippets. Maybe she will be kind enough to add an eye singeing snippet on her blog. As for Kelly she is too much of a good girl for any singeing of bodily parts.

Insert sex here…

I am in the middle of writing a book. It follows on from Tantalizing Tilly – which follows on from Penned Again which follows on from Anyone But You. Did I plan it that way? No – it just happened. These characters wandered into the story and I thought I like them. I don’t know about most authors but I don’t write in any scheduled, disciplined manner. I may start at the beginning or the middle or the end. I constantly criss-cross back and forward over paragraphs when I get stuck or if I come home from work and I have thought up something, usually at the traffic lights, that should go in Chapter 7 when I am only in Chapter 4. I also have the habit of writing the dialogue first and the story around it – the sex comes last. I know – how is that possible when there are some non erotic writers who think erotic writers build the story around

sex? Maybe some do – I don’t. Maybe some people should not tar every one with the same brush. So I write a stream of dialogue and then every so often I write the words ‘sex here’ because I think that would be an excellent moment for the hero and heroine to have sex. Then I go back and write in the sex. Yeah, it’s evidence of the chaos theory once more. My editor is now going, “That’s why her submissions are so shambolic.”

How hard is it to write sex? I have been discussing this with an aspiring writer. She has the stuff to write a scorcher of a book and I want to see her finish it. However it is hard to start off writing explicit sex when you never have. I think it’s because as girls we are taught certain ways of behaviour and as women we have a particular moral code. Also sex is so general. Let’s face it everyone has there ideas on what is great sex. How do you write a romance novel with sizzling sex that will appeal to all readers? Well, you can’t. Not everyone is going to like what you write so that’s rule number one. Get over yourself. Some people will never like what you write – move on. Rule number 2, on the
Amarinda scale, is it’s all about fantasy. I believe women want to read about this fantastic man who sees only beauty in the heroine and will do anything to please her. You gotta love a man like that. Rule 3 – be yourself. I you don’t want to write ménage as it makes you uncomfortable or it’s too hard to work out whose parts go where – then don’t. If writing submissive romance makes you want to slap the hero of your book then maybe it’s not for you. Write what you believe. I reckon that’s what makes others want to read your book – it’s believable or it could happen. People will easily tell you if your books suck and why…let’s call that rule 4. If they do – listen to what they are saying. They may be right in some way and yeah, maybe you can do better. Or if you believe in your heart they are wrong, then learn to develop a very thick skin and stand by what you believe in. Last Amarinda theory – try – if you don’t have a go and submit what you believe is your best work then you will never bloody know what could be. Put it out there – er, the book – not the sex.

Five fast ones with talented Ellora’s Cave author Taylor Tryst – click on the cover to buy

1. What star sign are you? Name one fabulous characteristic of this sign.

Pisces. Creativity, when it’s actually working. :}
I’m about to fire my muse.

2. If your book was made into a movie who would play the hero and heroine?

I’ve always imagined Angelina Jolie playing my heroine. She tough, strong and very sexual in nature. The hair, the lips, the bod…who could ask for more.

Ever since Buffy, Angel, and Bones, I’ve admired David Boreanaz. Talk about hot and brooding. MMMM--MMMMM. He’s total eye candy.

3. My favorite food is….because….

That’s easy. Mexican food is my favorite food, because I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and ate it constantly. I miss it every day. You just don’t find good, authentic Mexican food in Minnesota. I’ve even imagined opening a Mexican Food restaurant here.

4. If I was in charge of the world I would….

Be certain that military veterans receive all of the benefits that they deserve and that trainees in boot camp or basic training have advocates, are properly treated, and receive appropriate medical care.

5. Name your special talent.

I think I have a talent for relating to other people and animals on an emotional level. I’ve always been able to empathize and care deeply about other people’s emotions and the tragedies that might affect their lives. I also love animals and can’t imagine not having them as a part of my life. We have 5 horses, too many cats to mention, dogs, and a new litter of baby kittens. We’ve also rescued several lost dogs and cared for them until they were returned to their owners or taken to the animal shelter.

Leather and Lace By Taylor Tryst

Ex-cop turned private investigator Cleo Tanek receives a mysterious request to follow and document billionaire Lukas Nathanial Lace's every move. What she soon discovers, however, is that Lace has been marked for death and that the information she provided will assist in carrying out his murder.
Unable to control the desperate heat that ignites between them, they succumb to a night of hot, passionate sex. Cleo then learns that her mysterious client is a senator whom she believes ordered the hit. She must tell Luke the truth, keep him alive and somehow blow the senator out of the water.
With a fetish for leather and handcuffs, and the need to be in control, Cleo is fascinated by her irrepressible urge to submit to Lace's every whim, and the dominant role he assumes over her body, mind and soul. Cleo discovers that leather and lace is a deadly combination.

Leather and Lace - The excerpt – be warned – this is an adult excerpt

Cleo was so wet, and as they stumbled up the staircase, their fingers interlaced, she was unable to tear her mouth from his. He was like fire, and the worst of it was that she wanted to be burned.
His flesh was hot to the touch, and his mouth, dear God in heaven, thank you for that amazing mouth.
Exploring, sampling, taunting. She wondered if he tasted this delicious all over and desperately hoped she’d find out.
He stepped into the living room, heading for a black leather sofa and reaching up to loosen his tie.
“No,” Cleo scolded. “Don’t.” She knocked his hand away. She wanted to be the one who undressed him, wanted to be the one in control.
She was always in control and didn’t plan to give it up anytime soon. It was how she’d stayed alive in her line of work. How she kept her heart from being broken for so many years.
Though part of her wanted to give this man everything, to allow him to control her, her mind screamed out, demanding that she employ the only survival method that had worked all of these years.
If she was going to do this, she decided, she planned to enjoy the hell out of it and do it her way.
“Sit,” Cleo demanded, motioning Luke toward her black leather sofa.
Luke was so prim and proper in his expensive suit and those designer shoes. She wanted to tear away the layers of control that he prided himself in, and draw out the real Lukas Lace.
Oh, he checked that shit, all right. He was certain to keep it hidden, to keep his emotions hidden behind lock and key and hide what he really wanted from everyone.
He spent his entire life doing what his father had wanted him to do and being polite and proper, as his mother had required. Business and etiquette classes by age ten. He was a fine young man.
He was the perfect son, the perfect boss and the perfect executive but Cleo needed to be the one woman who drove him over the edge. The one woman who helped him break all of those stuffy rules.
In her book, rules didn’t apply.
Cleo had a desperate desire to peel off those clothes the minute she’d seen him. To ruin that good-boy image he so dutifully portrayed. She put her foot on the arm of the couch and bent forward to unbuckle her stiletto.
“No,” Luke said, shaking his head. “Don’t.”
Oh, Mr. Lace wanted to play. Cleo smiled wickedly. She was very good at playing games.
“I said sit,” she countered. He reached for her wrist but she palmed his chest and gave him a shove. She pushed him back into the sofa and bit her bottom lip.
She wasn’t one of his minions.
She wasn’t one of the women who threw themselves at his feet. She would do as she pleased and he would like it.
She’d see to that.
“I’ll come,” he warned her as she straddled his lap and he hissed as if in physical pain. He ran his palms over her thighs.
“You’re so hard,” Cleo whispered, grinding against his cock.
“I want you,” he growled. “I can’t remember the last time I wanted anyone like this.” He tugged on her hair, pulling her head back and leaning in to kiss her neck.
Cleo moaned as his lips found her bare skin.
“Maybe never,” he told her.
Cleo pulled back and nipped his lower lip, staring boldly into his eyes, eyes that were flickering with blue flame.
She grasped his face between her palms and shoved her tongue into his mouth.
The kiss was deep and fast, hard and thorough. Panting, gasping for air, they consumed, feeding off one another as if giving life.
Cleo ground her hips against the bulge in his pants. Hearts racing, she lost all conscious thought.
“Jesus, Mary and Joseph—” Luke tore his mouth from hers. He squeezed her hips, trying to get control.
If this kept up, he definitely wouldn’t last more than five seconds. He was a grown man, for God’s sake, not some pubescent teen on his first date.
Premature ejaculation wasn’t something he’d had to consider since Rebecca Ross in junior high. Not even then, when the mere sight of female flesh sent him over the edge, had he been so out of control, reacted so primitively.
Luke closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He attempted to ignore the rock-hard boner that was trying to pull an Incredible Hulk and rip its way out of his pants.
It had been too long since he’d had sex and this woman was unlike any he’d ever encountered. Couldn’t even be compared.
It was as if there had been no one before and there’d be no one after, for either of them.
The air filled with her flowery scent and he ran his hands down the long arch of her back and to the slope of her ass.
The moment he’d laid eyes on her in the lobby of his office building that morning—and yes, he was certain it had been her—he’d felt the earth shift around him like there’d been a quake.
She’d disappeared in the crowd and now that he had found her, she wasn’t getting away.
Fate had brought them together. Luke never challenged fate.
Her skin was creamy, as pale as midnight moonlight and her features cut with razor-sharp angles that took her beauty to a whole new level.
She wasn’t a perfect ten with the thin, gaunt look a model was required to maintain. She didn’t have perfect bone structure and there was no delicacy there.
Only dramatic strength. From the slash of her cheekbones, to arched brows that framed her emerald eyes burning with flecks of gold and brown, she was all power and intensity.
Cleo reached down between them and ran her hand over the bulge in his pants, tracing the outline of his cock beneath the fine fabric of his suit.
“No—” Luke shuddered. He grabbed her by the wrist and shook his head, pleasure so powerful it was almost painful filling his body and soul. “I’ll come…”
He had to take control or this was finished and he’d disappoint her. Disappoint them both.
He released her and drove his hands through her glorious hair. He pulled her into him, bucking his hips and capturing her mouth with his for a punishing kiss.
God, he loved her hair, her amazing body, the taste of her mouth.
He drove his tongue against hers, battling to take control. Tasting, seeking and feeding off her succulent flavor.
Cleo nipped his bottom lip, fighting him for control. She was making a power play but she was failing to control the zone, Luke thought with a half-smile.
Luke slid his hands up her athletic thighs and gripped her hips, pulling her against his throbbing cock, dry-humping her.
“Bed?” he commanded. He stood so suddenly that she gasped. Her legs instinctively wrapped around his waist as he cupped her ass and held her against his cock.
No more teasing. He wanted to fuck her now. Had to have her. “Where…is…it?”
Didn’t take you for the traditional type,” Cleo teased, grabbing his bottom lip between her teeth and biting.

Let’s talk about sex…

Anny Cook to me is one of the few authors around that can write romances that are both scorching hot and incredibly funny. That’s pretty hard to do. So how does she write what I call ‘gobsmackable’ sex and keep the romance as passionate and believable as the characters lust for one another? Well I asked her…

1. How hard it is to write realistic sex in a book? Actually, I try to be as realistic as possible. Sex is not usually some pretty scene with fuzzy edges like they do in the movies. It’s awkward and funny and messy. Do you concentrate more on the fantasy angle of what women really want or the technical specifics of body parts? I suppose if I concentrate on any fantasy angle, it has more to do with the man’s attitude than with technical specifics. I don’t usually write things that are physically impossible or really strange. Is there a guideline you use? Just my own imagination.

2. What wouldn’t you write about when it comes to erotica? I cannot ever envision writing extreme BDSM or things to do with body functions, such as golden showers, etc. Those are such a tremendous turn off to me that I don’t see any possible way to make them attractive. The same thing goes for sex involving children.

3. Do you set out to shock people when it comes to sex? Um, no. To amuse? To titillate? Actually, I sort of fumble along with the characters as they try this or that. If it’s amusing or titillating, then that’s in the eye of the reader. Personally, I don’t think that I do well writing “funny”, but there are frequently funny situations that pop up.

4. Have you ever had anyone totally disgusted in the explicit scenes in one of your books? I’ve never had anyone tell me they were upset with a scene in my book. In my own circle of acquaintances, they might not read the book at all because it had sex in it, but that wasn’t because of a particular scene—rather it was the entire idea of sex in a book. I respect other people’s right to their personal values. That doesn’t bother me.

5. Your sex scenes on the Flowers of Camelot and the Mystic Valley series’ make me laugh. Do you set out to be funny or is it an unconscious thing? I don’t ever set out to be funny. But sex is a pretty funny activity when it gets right down to it. I think we take a lot of joy out of it when we try to make it a serious thing. To me, sex should be one of the most joyous things we share with our partner. If it isn’t, we’re not doing it right.

6. Ménage is a hot genre at the moment. Why do you think that is? My take on that is pretty simple. Most ménage is two men and one woman. The idea of two men devoting all their attention to one woman is pretty attractive. And the idea of having two men to touch and explore isn’t bad either.

7. In the conquest to write good sex, do you think writers forget about the fact that it’s still a romance? Unfortunately, some writers forget that it’s not a “how-to” manual. Others seem to have a mental list in their heads... okay, last time they did it with the woman on top...this time we’ll do it with the guy on top... Do they forget about tenderness for passion? If the writer is truly one with the characters, then whatever those characters feel should come through in the scene. For example the love scenes I wrote for Arano and Silence in Cherished Destinies were far more gentle and tender than the love scenes I wrote for Honeysuckle, Dick and Peter. The circumstances were completely different.

So, tell me and Anny - what genre do you like best when it comes to erotica? Put a comment on this blog and you will go into the random draw to win a PDF copy of Daffodil. Now, as always, if I cannot track you down through your Blogger ID or you do not leave an email address you cannot win. If you are under witness protection you can email your answer to me on amarinda_jones@ yahoo.com.au. The contest ends midnight Wednesday April 2nd (EST USA) and I’ll email the winner and as always announce on the blog tomorrow. Keep watching for another contest coming to this blog soon.

Daffodil – the excerptwarning – this is a very adult excerpt

Raulf gestured for her to stand up. “It’s warm enough for you to take off the clothes,” he announced matter-of-factly. “Then you can undress Timmy and me.”
Daffodil’s mouth dropped open. “I—”
“Immediate obedience is the requirement,” he reminded her coolly. She froze, staring at him like a trapped animal. After a moment, he clicked his teeth. “Timmy, obviously, she needs assistance. Can you help her undress?”
Before Timmy could get to his feet, Daffodil shot off the chair like Raulf had lit a fire under her ass. Hurriedly she peeled the blouse and skirt off, folding them neatly and placing them on the table. Disappointed, Timmy subsided back to his place next to the fire.
“Now undress me.” Raulf bounced to his feet and stood at the foot of the pallet he had arranged next to the fire.
He stood motionless while she knelt at his feet and unfastened the clips on his boots. They slipped off easily once the clips were undone. Then she stood and unfastened the zip fasteners on his zipsuit, peeling it from his strong familiar body as she moved downward, revealing his muscled arms and lightly furred chest, that flat rippled abdomen with the faint trail of hair that led to his cock. Her hands brushed over his firm flanks as she tugged the stretchy suit down past his ass. His cock bounced free, nudging her cheek.
She fought the weird urge to take the dark dribbling crown in her mouth. Oddly enough the only experience she had with cock sucking was a onetime experiment with Timmy in the barn. With brisk determination, she continued with her task, ignoring the plump heavy balls nestled between his thighs. Finally, tugging the last of the fabric past his sturdy legs until it pooled at his ankles, she waited as he lifted first one foot and then the other so that she could slip the cloth over his feet. With a silent sigh of relief, she stood, shook out the suit and folded it neatly, placing it with her clothes on the table.
“Now Timmy.”
Timmy was quick to take his place next to Raulf. Daffodil fumbled for a moment with his boots before yanking them free. Then standing in front of Timmy, she began to undress him. Raulf moved behind her, reached around and cupped her breasts, tweaking gently at her nipples.
She whimpered and froze.
Raulf’s lips brushed her ear. “Undress Timmy,” he murmured.
In a flash of old memory, she remembered the day she and Honeysuckle were stretched out on an old blanket in the barn loft watching it rain. “Raulf wants to share you with another man,” Honey said out of the blue.
“What? Are you crazy? Raulf does what I tell him to do.”
“Not forever, Daffodil. Some day, that will change. And when it does, he will share you. Count on it. He likes to watch another man make his woman come.”

“Undress Timmy, Daffodil.” Raulf’s low persuasive voice jerked her back to the cavern. With trembling fingers she spread Timmy’s zipsuit open, pushing it off his broad tanned shoulders that were lightly sprinkled with freckles. He helped her with the tight fabric covering his arms and then stood stock still as she brushed it down to his waist. All the time, Raulf was lightly tugging her nipples, sending pulses of heat to her excited clit and wet pussy.
When she tried to squeeze her legs together to relieve some of the building tension, she found that Raulf was prepared to prevent her attempt with his feet placed between hers. “Uhn-uhn-uh, continue. Finish it, Daffodil.”
