Wannabe Bridezilla...

So, I volunteered yesterday to help out a Biker dude club – Coral Coast Riders - who were volunteering their bikes and riders to take medics, media and technical officials (those who looked for cheats) out on the Ironman course which stretched from Cairns to Port Douglas and back again. Those volunteer bikers worked really hard and were knackered – literally – I saw them all walk back into the volunteer tent after a very long day on the bike. My job was to sign people and helmets in and out and know where people were. And then there was Tracey – who was supposed to assist me. Supposed to. Assist. Interesting words. The thing with Tracey was she was there to find a man and marry him.

I knew from the first minute I met her, several days before, she was on a groom hunt. She wasn’t interested in the organizing of the event. She was interested in the list of riders and who was and wasn’t married. I knew when she walked into the tent and would not give up the mobile phone we had for communication with the riders that she was going to catch and tag one of them but not let go. How to describe Tracey? Desperate, needy and a pain in the arse. After all the riders had ridden off she decided, despite being a volunteer (we were wearing a bright yellow t-shirt with VOLUNTEER written on it – a dead giveaway) that she needed to go and buy shoes. She was gone for hours. When she came back she rang some of the biker guy numbers because she could. With no response there, because they were out on the road doing their job, she wandered off again…and again…oh yeah and again – until the guys started turning up. Then she came back and made a beeline for them. There ain’t nothing more desperate than a wannabe bride.

In the end, with no takers, Tracey left and I continued on with the Volunteers in the tent. I have to say that they were amazing, kind, giving people, with interesting lives and we had long chats in between sign ins and outs. These are the people that keep events running so others can enjoy them knowing they are safe, looked after and everything is running to plan. I was surprised at the number of people who stopped into the Volunteer tent to thank us, who handed me flowers and who came to us just because they were lost and knew someone in yellow would know.

As for the Bikers? Very skilled, dedicated and passionate about what they were doing and just great men and women to talk to.

As for Tracey? I don’t hate her. I feel sorry for her. No man is going to cure all her problems or make her happy.

As for Cairns? You done real good.

Just you?

I took some time off and shot up to Port Douglas – 50 mins from home – and did an overnighter. I just needed a moment away from stuff so I had time to think and not do. I got an excellent local’s rate at one of the resorts. The beach was fab but it is FNQ (Far North Queensland) and everything is always good in FNQ. I did get a couple of swims in before the beaches were closed due to stingers and I sat and stared at the waves for a long time and thought about stuff. Waves - amazing, life changing and restorative things.

A few of thoughts...

1. I loathe plastic key cards. I like real keys that have substance. See pic. My keys versus pissy hotel card. Rarely do I lose real keys. Plastic ones disappear the minute they hit my handbag.

2. Why are they going with those dispensers now in all the hotels? How am I supposed to get supplies for the gym? Where have all the freebies gone? Long time passing?

3. I wonder at people who cannot fathom why anyone travels alone. I do. I like it. I adhere to the 'she who travels fastest, travels alone' policy. Is it just you staying? Dining? Swimming? Standing on my head? Chanting a Himalayan pop song from the balcony of my room? Yes. It is. And I am not 'just’ anyone. I swear, we accept gay and lesbians more than we accept sole travellers. People are different. Not everyone needs to have their hand held.

In conclusion, I know the following – I'm pretty damn good as I am. And just me? Yeah and get over it.

Port bound....

I am in Port Douglas - http://www.pddt.com.au/ - this weekend. It’s literally just 50 minutes up the road from where I live. Why? I think the picture above says it all. Working at getting it right. Life – work – people – balance – me. Hoping you are the same.

I was thinking today at work…yes, normally I do try to avoid that and no, it wasn't about work stuff because as I was thinking I was also searching the internet for weekend accommodation at Port Douglas…anyway my thoughts swung to short escapes, escapes plan and mad bust outs of doing random, weird things that people wonder why I’m doing them. See? I was incredibly busy.

So, there I was thinking about random schemes and I also stopped and considered the top 5 things I want in my life.

1. Win a humungus lotto prize
2. Learn how to run better
3. Get more sleep – oh god yes
4. Do something worthwhile – still working on what that could be
5. Find a man who will be besotted by my loveliness.

Hmmm…at the start of the year a man was at the top of my list and now he’s at the bottom. I like men. Really I do. We need them to lift and reach for things. But I was remined once more that I do not need a man to make me happy. Money and sleep will do it. Yeah….that works for me.

Eat or rambulate...

So, go to Port Douglas and contemplate my navel while sitting on the beach before rambling around the Port markets – or – go and buy a microwave as my old one – that I have had 5 years – went to god. Nothing lasts. And how does one cook without a microwave?

Hmmmm…I believe I’ll go door number one thanks, Bob. Food can wait…

‘Got in Patrick…

…. my car, and took the Captain Cook Highway from where I live in Cairns to the fabulous Port Douglas. It’s a winding road that follows the coast for the most part and it takes about 50mins to drive. I had to give Patrick an aspirin after the drive. He doesn’t like lots of bends. Anyway, when we got there, I left Patrick in the shade…he doesn’t do full sun either – he gets cranky - and I stripped off to my togs and hit the beach. Conditions - overcast and the water was flat. But I threw myself into the water and splashed around as you do. Its stinger season in far north Queensland. That means box jelly fish and the deadly Irukandji are in huge numbers in the water. If you don’t want to die you swim in the stinger nets and between the lifesaver flags. Unlike many countries, the majority of Aussie lifesavers, and I believe our Kiwi cousins across the ditch, are volunteers. You learn as a child when you go to the beach to swim between the flags so you can be seen if you need to be saved. You also read the beach report. See pic.

After the swim, I walked around Port Douglas for a while then back to the beach for a long moment of staring at the waves and contemplating life. My conclusion? I dunno…life just happens.

I don’t think so, Mister…

When I was on hols, I wandered around and joined up with a bird feeding demo group while at the Rainforest Habitat just outside Port Douglas.

http://www.rainforesthabitat.com.au/links/cairns.htm

It was very interesting listening to the keeper as she fed the birds. I personally love the cassowary. Why? It’s unique, full bodied and full of attitude. Anyway the keeper said how the cassowary male and female are kept apart and only come together once a year to mate…that is if she’s in the mood. I pictured the poor male cassowary getting all excited, counting off the days to his yearly shag - and then she wanders in – looks him up and down and says “I don’t think so, Mister…” What can a poor boy do?

I always get checked for explosives....

...at the airport...not sure why. I must look like a dangerous desperado. Yep, that would be it...

Anyway...some pictures...more to follow when less knackered...

The Wicked Ice cream and Internet bar where I spent time being wicked...

As per many email requests...my latest feet photo. There's another one on facebook...

Four mile beach Port Douglas where I spent many a moment...

The quintessential Aussies...lazy, laconic and lovely...

I chased this cassowary all over the wildlife park...the little bugger kept hiding from me. It gave in eventually...as you do...I can be quite annoying...

The early morning sunrise from my hotel in Cairns...beautiful...

...and the daylight view...

Fetish for Life - fantastic fetish footwear in Cairns. Love this store...

On the road…

…to see one of these. It’s a cassowary, a native to the tropics of Far North Queensland or FNQ as we like to call it because we’re essentially a country of casual speakers. Of course it’s not all about funny looking birds. I’m back up north to the tropics of Port Douglas and Cairns to do lots of fun and interesting stuff for a week. I like it up there.

The blog won’t be empty though. I have various rambling posts set to go. No one rambles on like me.

The body okay…

…not the body beautiful but the body okay. I mention this as it was once more reinforced to me that it matters not what you look like – if you are fat or thin or tall or short or in Anny Cook’s case a blue person. Of course I always knew this…not the blue person thing until I came across Anny…but I always knew outward appearance was just the shell of a person. I personally, have a short, chunky shell…

...but, I digress…it was reinforced to me when I was at the beach in Port Douglas. There was no one on that beach – Aussie or non Aussie - who was the body beautiful. Not a soul. Maybe it was the fact that Australian beaches, and Port Douglas in particular, are very relaxed and casual.

Maybe it’s more our own perception of how we think we should look. Maybe we should all stop and think and look at those around us. Everyone is flawed. Maybe we should believe those who love us and tell us in a touch or a look they love us for who we are.

Home from the sea…

....swam, walked, shopped, ate too much…walked some more to work it off…swam some more, got a tatt, met up with a dear, sweet, aggravating, sexy friend, trekked through the rainforest, hung out at the Wicked Ice Cream bar and internet shop in Port Douglas and brought home what appears to be a suitcase full of sand…please may I do it again?

Mad urges…

…I love ‘em. I follow ‘em. A couple of weeks ago I was outside chopping, hacking and slashing in the garden. I was sweaty and hot and bleeding from various cuts to my hands and I thought to myself…“I need a holiday.” I’ve been a bit run down of late – okay, a lot if blood tests are anything to go by – so I’m hauling my fat arse off to Port Douglas, tropical north Queensland, tomorrow in an attempt to relax. Relax? Oh please – there’s four mile beach to walk back and forward, the rainforest of the Daintree to hike, adventure trails to take, intensive shopping…who has time to relax?

In the meantime the blog will not be empty. I have a bunch of talented guests lined up for the week...so check 'em out.
