The engagement ring...

So, I'm working at a temp job at the moment. It involves liaising with members of the public for a week and a bit and there is a hell of a lot of walking involved. I have another person as my partner on this chatting-walking gig. Never met her before today but she made it very clear to me that she, let's call her, er, Charlene was doing the job to scope out 'talent' to find her future husband. She wants to get married, she already has an engagement ring - her Prince Charming does not have to fork out for this - and she WILL get married. There is no maybe in this. Charlene is a woman possessed. I found her intense need to hog-tie a man to her for marital-there-is-no-way-we-will-ever-divorce-wedded bliss fascinating and scary. On one hand she knows what she wants - man, wedding ring and to become Mrs Charlene X. On the other, in my opinion, she's scary obsessed to the point of not being realistic. I get that some women would like to be a 'couple' but there is also the fact that not everyone marries. Sometimes fate just doesn't make it so. I did point that out to her. Charlene's thoughts on this are because too many women get involved with ' losers' and give up on marriage and 'fate' is stupid. I personally think women like Charlene, who are so marriage obsessed, scare men away. What man wants to be driven to marriage? And to have your own engagement ring to expedite the proceedings? Scary much? It begs the question what happens to the Charlene's of the world if they do not marry?

Larry, Larry, Larry...

…and you’re probably wondering why you’re still single and Sleepless in Austin – not that I could get into your website to read about all the amazing virtues of Larry, The Man. The Legend. The Dude among Dudes. Prince Charming…ydah, ydah, ydah.

In short, Larry has decided now is the time to marry and he requires a white, thin, virtuous housefrau to be at his back and call. I expect someone will marry him and be his first wife for a couple of years. After that? Maybe he won't be so picky.

I believe this comment on facebook sums it up nicely...

Good luck with your search, Larry.

Sanctimonious sods...

Maybe it’s because I have the freedom to think, do and say whatever I want that I believe others should have that right as well and that love and marriage cannot be legislated for or against. Love. It happens. It’s not gender specific. People. Go figure. They’re crazy. They fall in love. How dare they upset bigots?

If all the gay and lesbian couples were legally allowed the right of all human beings to get married and live their lives the way they want to, what would the bitter and the twisted, sanctimonious sods who require the world to be a certain way do with themselves? Hmmm….maybe possibly mind their own damn business?

Politically incorrect thought for today...

I don’t understand women who stayed married yet absolutely refuse to allow their husbands to touch them. What’s that about? Why are you married? Why are you living together? Is it that you’re over sex, intimacy and the whole being together thing?  So, why are you with him? Scared to go out on your own? Is it safer to be a couple even though you aren’t technically a couple?  Be a real woman and work out who you are and what you want and don’t use, hold on to or blame a man for your inadequacies. Woman up! Holding on to someone because you want to present a ‘together’ picture to the world is hypocritical and frankly sorry arsed and I have no respect for women like this.  I will never understand emotional blackmail and selfishness. No wonder men are confused.

Of boobs and Humpenagelfelderkirks...

I always have the radio on in the car. Two talk shows had me pondering stuff today. The AM one was talking about is it right for a man to look at a woman’s breasts? The answer is no but of course a man is going to look as he’s genetically inclined to so why bother asking the question I say? Then they brought up women who have breast implants to boost the size of their boobs and do those women have any right to complain if a man stares at them when technically they had enhanced them – usually to an extreme state – for them to be noticeable - so is a woman putting her boobs out there to be stared at? Really good question. The feminist in me says a woman can do what she bloody wants to her body and men need to get a grip. Would a man want people staring at his groin and trying to work out length? The other side of the coin is if a woman has implants to make herself look better she should expect men will stare at her overly fake breasts so deal with it. Hmmm…that’s a valid point too. My theory on boobs is they're essentially fatty tissue so ipso facto fat thighs, arses, arms and bellies should be given the same adoring stare by men as they do boobs.

The PM discussion…whether a woman should invest in a relationship with a man if he had a surname she didn’t like regardless how much she loved him. That is if she was viewing him as a potential husband but he had a weird surname like Humpenagelfelderkirk (apologies to Humpenagelfelderkirks out there) is she justified dumping him? A lot of woman called into the show and said that had ended relationships because of the man’s surname. My thoughts? People spend years looking for love. Some never find it. If you love someone enough to marry them and be with them for life but you hate their surname? Bloody use your own.

Cash cow…

On my early morning walk around the neighbourhood, I pass by this fitness shop and there is a sign that irritates the hell out of me. “Fit to Wed.” It’s advertising services to get a woman into shape on her wedding day. Now call me crazy but if you’re in love and getting married how does your weight or fitness matter? For better or worse? And what about the groom? Why isn’t the advertising aimed at him? Fit to wed? Cashing in on people’s fears and insecurities more like it.

Marry, tarry, cash and carry…

So I was talking to an acquaintance of mine today about romance books. She reads ‘em by the boatload. She’s read mine. Her main criticism of my books and others on the market today? Everyone is having sex but no one seems to get married much in them. Huh. That never occurred to me as a problem. It is to her. Why? Because her theory is romance means a happy ending and that’s supposed to be marriage and not just sex…sex is good apparently…well it is…but in books specifically as long as the couple get married. Huh again. I wonder if this is a common perception of romance readers or a select few who believe marriage is some goal to be obtained. While I am not about to change who I am or my style of writing, it is food for thought.
