The age of love…

A friend rang and told me she was in love. I was happy for her. It’s nice to hear good news for a change. She told me she never thought it would happen to her due to her age. She’s in her mid 50’s. Hmmm…interesting. I wasn’t aware that only a certain age demographic could fall in love. Is that a well known theory?

Then I thought about it some more and I realized romance writers always – 98.6% of the time I reckon – based on furphy Amarinda stats - write about only ‘younger’ people falling in love. Why do we do that? Is it because we write to a market that believes only 20 - 35 year olds can find romance? Are we perpetuating the whole what age someone can fall in love thing? When did we all start being surprised an older person could fall in love? Maybe we need to get out more and look at life and the people around us. Maybe TV shows and movies need to be based more in real life age and not Hollywood age. Me? I’m not surprised what anyone does anymore.

Maybe that's why the movie, It's Complicated, with older actors Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin was so funny and real-life and poignant. Love can happen at any age. My grandmother fell in love at 60 and married! Go Grandma!

I was getting pretty sick of Harlequins and Silhouettes even though I'd loved them for years. Then Harlequin came out with a line featuring heroines from their late 30's into their sixties and I loved it. Unfortunately, they've canceled the series.

I'm currently writing a romance for TWRP's Last Rose of Summer series with older heroines. However, the particular project I'm aiming at is for the Class of '85. The Class of '85 seems like pretty young people to me. They're 42-43. As I was the Class of '78 I keep seeing the Sophomores from the Class of '80s and think of them as little kids. I know better, but it's like I'm in a time warp. Anyway, love is good at any age. An 82 year old woman I worked with several years ago quit to get married. :)
